Two CU duffers in top 15 through one round

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team has four players here competing individually in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate, with two Buffaloes in the top 15 after Monday's first round.

Sophomore Brandon Knight is tied for ninth after carding a 4-under par 68 on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club course layout.  He had a team-high six birdies (fifth-most in the field) with 10 pars and a couple of bogeys, and was under par on all configurations (2-under on the par-5's, 1-under on the par 3's and 4's.  Starting on No. 17, he opened his day with three pars and then made three birdies in a row and added a fourth on No. 8 to make the turn at 4-under 32.  He made back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 but came back to make consecutive birds on Nos. 13 and 14 before closing with two pars.

Senior Jack Holland is tied for 15th after fashioning a 3-under 69, as he made five birdies and 11 pars opposite two bogeys.  He got off to a hot start, as he was 5-under through 10 holes before cooling off a bit, bogeying two of his last four holes.  In matching his season-best low score, he played the par-5's at 3-under (birdied three of the four), tied for second-best in the field.

Freshman Parker Paxton got off to a rough start, as after parring his first two holes, he bogeyed No. 2 and doubled No. 3 to rise to 3-over after four holes.  But from that point on,  he settled down, parring his next four holes before recording his first of four birdies on the 416-yard, par 4 8th.  After five more pars, he finished up with three  birdies in his final four holes to pull back to even and stand tied for 36th.

Senior Tucker Clark, coming off a lower back strain, fluctuated between being even and 1-over par his first 12 holes, but struggled down the stretch.  He doubled-bogeyed No. 11 and then had three bogeys in his final five holes to finish with a 4-over 76, tying him for 70th.

"Some good golf by Brandon and Dutchy (Holland)," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Those guys looked good.  Parker battled back really well after a tough start.  Tucker had some good moments as well but had a rough finish."

Three players are tied for the individual lead with 7-udner par 65s, including Texas-San Antonio's Kaelen Dulany, who after starting with a double bogey, at one point made eight birdies in a row and finished with nine in his last 12 holes.

The second round is slated for Tuesday morning (10 a.m. MST shotgun start) with the third and final round set for Wednesday.

NOTES: In the team competition, defending Division II champion Colorado Christian and Charlotte are tied for the lead with 13-under par team scores; 15 schools are competing … The average score for all 90 rounds on Monday was 72.90, with 35 players under par (17 in the 60's) and another 10 completing the first 18 holes even …
