Getting to know the new players throughout the season

BOULDER – On Wednesday, the Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team closes out its two-game homestand with a familiar foe, Arizona, at the CU Events Center.

The Buffs have 10 new faces on the team this season, and CUBuffs.com will feature 'Get to Know' spotlights on all 10 players throughout the season.

Next up is freshman Tabitha Betson.

Why did you start playing basketball and how old were you?
I actually started because of my brother. He started playing, and I just wanted to be just like him. So I was like, 'Give me a basketball.' I was six, actually. I was really little.

Can you share your experience representing Australia in the U17 World Cup?
That was really insane. We were away for, like, a month because of COVID. We had two tournaments in one, but it was amazing. As soon as I got that phone call that I made the team [I started] crying, I was bawling. I ran, and I told my mom. It was just an honor to represent Australia and one I hope to be able to have again.

Why did you choose to study in the United States?
I always wanted to play college basketball. I don't know what it was, but since I was like eight, I was like, 'I'm playing college basketball.' I don't know who I knew. I don't know how I knew about it, but I was just like, 'I'm going to the US, and I'm playing.'

What made you choose CU?
The coaches. Honestly, I love the coaching staff. I had a really good connection with JR during the recruiting process, and I think they're amazing coaches. I felt like I had so much to learn from them. Also, the community is amazing. That was a really big thing. Just on my visit, it just felt comfortable. I came [to CU] and I knew I could go here, and I knew this is where I wanted to be.

What's been one of your favorite memories with the team so far?
Honestly, something that stuck with me from the summer was when we were doing this water race competition for a fun 'getting to know you.' I don't know why I was so committed to winning. I put the water in my mouth. I was carrying the water. We're transporting it. And I just really remember that for some reason. It was just fun with the team, and it was a really good bonding experience and it was the first time I kind of really felt comfortable with the team.

What's the best part about being a Buff?
Definitely, for me, the community. There are certainly people who I love here. I love my teammates, I love the coaches, but I also love people outside of that, like our academic coordinator, LT. I love her so much. I could never leave just because of how much I love the people.

What do you like to do outside of basketball?
I love movies. I am a movie buff. I would watch anything and everything; I just love movies.

What are some of your favorite movies?
My favorite series is Harry Potter. My favorite movie would probably be Little Miss Sunshine, Dead Poets Society, or maybe Pride; it's a really good one as well.

Betson and the Buffs will be back in action on Wednesday at home against Arizona (7 p.m. MT/ESPN+).

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Feb. 8, at Iowa State (ESPN+/3 p.m. MT).
