Buffs Lead At Suspended Ram Classic

September 22, 2025 | Women's Golf

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Riding momentum from one of the top team rounds in school history, the Colorado women's golf team surged into the lead at the Colonel Wollenberg Ram Classic before the tournament was suspended late in the second round on Monday at Ptarmigan Country Club.

The Buffaloes registered an 11-under-par 277 in the morning session, tying for the third-best 18-hole team score in Colorado's 32-year history of women's golf. The Buffaloes stayed solid during the second round of play, moving to 17-under before strong winds, rain, and lightning in the area halted play with between two and four holes remaining.

Individually, Junior Maya McVey is tied for the lead after a spectacular first round, carding a 7-under 65, which like the team mark, is tied for the third-best 18-hole score in team history.

Colorado was in second place after the first round, behind Cal Poly, which shot a blistering 16-under par in the morning session. The Buffaloes caught the Mustangs early in the second round. While Colorado continued to pile up the red numbers at 6-under for the afternoon, Cal Poly struggled on the back nine, tailing off to a 7-over round before the round was suspended.

"It was so fun to see some low rounds and red numbers up on the leaderboard," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "Such an incredibly low round for Maya this morning, the third best in school history, that's really special. I was pleased to see us take advantage of the par 5s, especially the second and 16th which are reachable. There's also about six holes out here that you really need to pay attention to too, and I was really proud of the way we played, especially 10 this afternoon."

Colorado led the field on the long holes, collectively shooting 13-under on the par 5s. The Buffaloes tamed the toughest hole on the course at the 10th, with two birdies and five pars during the second round.

The second round will resume at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and will be directly followed by the third round. Colorado takes a five-shot lead into the restart of play, with CSU Fullerton at 12-under. Cal Poly is in third at 9-under.

McVey began her first round 3-under on the front but suffered a double-bogey at the par-4 10th to drop to 1-under. She turned it around quickly, however, on the par-4 12th she holed out from 60 yards on her second shot for an eagle to cancel out the double. She was flawless down the stretch, logging four birdies on the final six holes, including the last three.

McVey, tied with CSU Fullerton's Davina Xanh, was even through 15 holes when play was suspended.

"(McVey) showed such great patience through that double," Sheils said. "She didn't let it trip her up whatsoever. She took it in stride and played beautiful golf today. Her putter was hot, and I'm not surprised she was able to take it deep because she's just a phenomenal player."

Freshman Brenna Higgins is in fourth place at 5-under, two strokes behind the leaders, with two holes left in her second round. Higgins shot a 4-under, 68, in the first round, the first sub-70 mark in her young collegiate career. After playing even for the first 10 holes, Higgins caught fire with five birdies on the back nine. She picked up another stroke during the second round. Higgins was even through nine, birdied the par-4 10th, then logged seven straight pars before play was stopped.

"Brenna played really nice today," Sheils said. "She was hitting quality golf shots and I saw her hole quite a few of her putts. It was really fun to see things come together for her."

Freshman Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 17th at even par. She shot a 72 in the first round, rallying with two late birdies at the 15th and 18th. She was 1-over through 11 in her second round before a birdie at the par-4 12th got her back to even where she remains with four holes to play.

Junior Carolyn Fuller is tied for 26th at 1-over with three holes to play in her second round. After a disappointing 78 in the first, she bounced back in a big way during the afternoon. She was 5-under for the second round when play was halted with three holes to go. Fuller started her second round with an eagle at the second and stayed even through her next 11 holes before ending the day with a birdie at the par-4 14th and another eagle on her last hole of the day, the par-5 16th.

Sophomore Vanessa Ngo is tied for 30th at 2-over with two holes left to play in her second round. Ngo shot even 72 in the first round.

Playing as individuals, sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied for 13th at 3-under with four holes remaining in her second around and freshman Ananthi Vivek, making her collegiate debut, is tied for 66th at 10-over with three holes left.
