GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Shaking off the cobwebs from a three-month break from competition, the Colorado women's golf team is in ninth place halfway through the spring season-opening Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club.
No. 43-ranked Colorado played its first 27 holes at 16-over par, playing the first round at 10-over and completing the front nine of the second round at a slightly higher pace at 6-over. The unique tournament setup will have teams complete the second round on the back nine on Saturday, followed by the third and final round.
A little bit of nerves, rust and a challenging setup on the 6,210-yard par 72 Guadalajara CC course made higher numbers prevalent for the entire field. With all teams playing their first competitive golf since late October or early November, scores in the red were at a premium. No. 19 Oklahoma State holds the 27-hole lead at 1-over, five strokes better than Tulsa, No. 38 Virginia and No. 28 Florida State.
"There's definitely some first-round jitters when you haven't competed in a long time, it's just something you have to contend with," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We're happy the first day is over and I really think we're settled in and going to be feeling more comfortable tomorrow."
One Buffalo in particular shook off that rust and settled into a groove right away. Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy is in sixth place through 27 holes at 2-under. She shot a 70 in the first round, her fourth under-par round of the year, and stayed even through the front nine of the second round.
O'Shaughnessy made birdie right out of the gate on the 470-yard, par-5 first and remained at 1-under through 12. She dropped to even after a bogey at the par-4 13th, but responded with back-to-back birdies at the par-3 15th and par-4 16th to finish off her round of 70.
The par-5 first wasn't as kind to O'Shaughnessy to open the second round, as she dropped a stroke with a bogey, but after six-straight pars, she birdied the par-3 eighth for the second time on the day to stay even for the round and 2-under overall heading into Saturday, six shots off the lead and only three out of second.
"Ellen's round was such a bright spot," Sheils said. "She actually didn't feel like she had her best ball striking (day) and that pretty much forced her into playing more conservative golf, aiming for the middle of the greens and two-putting from there. She relied on her sharp short game and that served her really well."
Junior Carolyn Fuller is tied for 30th at 5-over, shooting a 75 in the opening round and playing the front nine of the second round at 2-over. Junior Maya McVey is tied for 41st at 7-over after recording a 76 in the first round and is 3-over through nine holes of the second.
Brenna Higgins and Vanessa Ngo are tied for 45th at 8-over. Ngo had the better first round of the two, shooting a 77, with the help of back-to-back birdies at the same spot as O'Shaughnessy at the 15th and 16th. Higgins carded a 79 in the first round, but has the second-best start to the second round for the Buffaloes at 1-over through nine holes.
Washington's Carmen Lim holds the 27-hole lead at 8-under, three strokes better than Houston's Moa Svedenskoid and Oklahoma State's Lucy Darr. TCU's Camille Min-Gaultier and Virginia's Yuuki Takada are at 3-under with O'Shaughnessy just one stroke behind them.
Colorado will group with Washington and TCU to continue second-round action on Saturday, beginning off the No. 10 tee at 7:50 a.m. MT with those same pairings continuing immediately into the final 18 holes.
NOTE: All Round 2 scores are nine holes. The second nine holes will be completed Saturday followed by the third and final round.
