More Top Marks for the Buffs in Beantown

January 31, 2026 | Track and Field

BOSTON — Colorado junior Drew Costelow highlighted several noteworthy performances for the Buffaloes on Saturday in the final day of the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University.

Costelow, running his first 800m of the season, crossed the finish with the fastest time in program history. His time of 1:48.50 topped the previous mark of 1:49.30 set by Rick Musgrave in 1976.

"We had a few top 10 all-time CU marks today, and that is always a good sign," coach Sean Carlson noted. "Drew running a school record in his first 800 of the season is a great start for him and coach [Ellen] Hengst."

Junior transfer Ty Cook made his CU debut, also running in the 800m. He finished in 1:50.49, placing him seventh on the program's top 10 list.

Three Buffs took part in the 5000m on Saturday. Sophomore Jake Liebert led the pack with a personal best and placed second on CU's top 10 list with a 13:32.99. Two spots behind him was James Overberg with a time of 13:36.65. Dean Casey rounded out the group with a time of 13:51.61.

"Jake Liebert continues to take the steps necessary to become one of our top guys and leaders of the future as a redshirt-freshman, running 13:32.

"Some of our men left wanting more, and that's a good thing because our standard is continuing to grow," Carlson added.

How It Happened

The 800m Invite was the first event of the day for the Buffs in Beantown. Costelow was the first out of the gate in the second of three heats. He finished fifth in his heat but was third overall among collegiate runners. Cook finished fourth in the third heat and was the fifth fastest collegiate finisher.

Isaiah Givens was up next for CU in a stacked 3000m Invite field. He ran a sub-30.00 split in his fifth lap and finished as the second collegiate runner with a time of 7:58.25.

Liebert kicked hard down the stretch in the 5000m, posting his best split of 26.69 on his last lap, becoming the fourth collegiate competitor across the finish. Overberg matched the effort, also posting his best split of 31.08 his last time around, in fifth among NCAA competitors. Casey ended the 7th in the collegiate field.

Later on, Tanner Newkirk, Kole Mathison, TJ Hansen, Grady Rauba, Lukas Haug and Charles Robertson ran in the 3000m Open. Newkirk was CU's top finisher in the open division, posting a 7:52.57 in the second heat.
