CU Men Shine With Five Top 10 Marks, New School Record, And Top 5 NCAA Mark

BOULDER—Ty Cook set a new CU record and Justine Kipkoech moved into the top five nationally, highlighting an impressive day for the Colorado Buffaloes track & field team as the third CU home meet of the indoor season came to a close Saturday at the Ford Practice Facility.

"The men had a good day, a really, really good day," CU coach Sean Carlson said. "Ty just ran the school record in the 800.  Justine had a 3:53 in the mile and sits fifth in the NCAA right now.  Danny (Tragarz) ran a 46, that's awesome, an awesome day for him.  Ernest (Campbell) ran a great rust-buster for him and great opener, really close to his PR.  Antonio (Votour) went sub-8, that's really good in the hurdles.  The men had a really good day."

Cook, who moved into the top 10 in CU history last week in Boston, set the CU record in the 800 meters in a time of 1:48.38, also setting a new PR.  The same race he moved into the top 10, Drew Costelow set the then-school record with a time of 1:48.50 and now that duo is first and second in CU history and the only two with sub-1:49 marks in the books.

Kipkoech ran an adjusted time of 3:53.05 in the mile, moving from No. 3 to No. 2 in CU history and from No. 18 to No. 5 nationally this season.

Beyond Cook and Kipkoech, three other Buffs moved into the top 10 in CU history in various events, led by Danny Tragarz, who moved into second place in the 400 meters with a time of 46.69.

Antonio Votour moved into third place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.94, and new Buff Ernest Campbell ran a 6.76 in the 60 meters to move into a tie for ninth place in CU history.  Campbell joined the track & field roster this week and is also a wide receiver on the football team.

"This sets us up really, really well going into the DMR weekend," Carlson said. "What Isaiah (Givens) has run in the mile, what Justine is running in the mile.  Ty ran the school record in the 800 and Danny had a really good quarter.  We should be able to put together a really good DMR in a couple weeks."

The Buffs fourth and final home meet, the Colorado Last Chance, will take place Feb. 20 at the Ford Practice Facility and will include the DMR on the list of events.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Votour got things underway for the Buffaloes in the 60m hurdles and advanced to the finals with a time of 8.18.  Next in the 60 meters, Campbell advanced to the finals with a time of 6.92.  Johnny Homsy did not advance with a time of 7.14 in his heat.

In the Men's Mile, Kipkoech ran an adjusted time of 3:53.05, which moved him into the No. 2 spot in CU history and No. 5 spot in the NCAA this season.  Kipkoech was No. 3 on the performance list with his adjusted time of 3:54.92 on Jan. 23 here at the FPF.  This season, the Buffs have placed the top five and six of the top seven mile marks on the CU performance list.

Next up, Ana Peters ran an adjusted time of 18:41.88 as the only CU athlete participating in the 5000 meters.

The finals for both the 60m hurdles and 60 meters were next, and Votour improved on his season best of 8.00 down to 7.94 and moved from sixth into a tie for third in CU history.  Campbell ran a 6.76 in the 60 meter final to move into the Top 10 list, tied for ninth.

Next up was the 400 meters and Tragarz set a new PR in 46.69, moving up from No. 8 to No. 2 in CU history.  He entered the Top 10 on Feb. 1 at the FPF with a time of 47.36. Joran Ball set a new PR with a time of 48.72 and Jameson Leigh ran 49.51, just missing his PR, in their respective heats.

Moving onto the 800 meters, Cook set the new CU record in a time of 1:48.38, bettering the mark that Drew Costelow set in Boston a week ago by 12-hundredths of a second.  Cook had moved into No. 8 on the list that same day with his time of 1:50.49 and now the two are 1-2 in the CU record book and the first two Buffs to go under 1:49.  Cook also bettered his PR of 1:48.66 that he had set while at Oklahoma State last season. In the women's 800 Riley Burkey ran a time of  2:11.54.

In the women's 3000 meters, Linda Weigang won her heat and set a new PR in an adjusted time of 9:59.61. Georgia Bell came in just behind her in that heat in an adjusted time of 10:11.28 in her first collegiate 3k.

"For the women, this is a good meet for us to train through a little bit and use as a building block going into conference," Carlson said.
