The Buffs pick up a dominant win over No. 28 Oklahoma State.

BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team notched an impressive upset win over No. 28 ranked Oklahoma State, 4-2, handing them their first conference loss, Sunday at the Meadows Tennis Club.

Colorado now holds a 10-4 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the Big 12. Oklahoma State moves to an overall record of 6-4, and 3-1 in conference.

The match marks the highest ranked victory since defeating No. 16 Washington at home in 2023.

"Thank you to Michael Tasker and his crew for their help this morning, they are the reason these courts are ready to play," head coach Anthony Pham said. "Really proud of the way our team competed. Obviously coming back from a tough loss this Friday, it shows we're a resilient group."

Despite a lost doubles point to begin the match, Colorado prevailed into four singles victories to earn the dominant upset.

From two singles victories came individual upsets as well, found at the top spot by Aya El Sayed and No. 3 from Pia Rebec.

Alongside El Sayed and Rebec, Rixt van der Werff and Yukiko Ikedo picked up wins at their respective courts as well, helping to seal the win for Colorado. Van der Werff found a straight set win at No. 2, while Ikedo took a forfeit at No. 6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
To begin doubles play, Colorado held an advantage before play started. With just five players, the Cowgirls forfeited their No. 3 doubles position, giving Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson an automatic win.

This meant the doubles point came down to the top two spots, and Oklahoma State was the first to capture a win at the top spot. El Sayed and Rebec fought a hard fight, but fell just short to No. 20 Anastasiya Komar and Rose Marie Nijkamp, 6-4.

It came down to Lera Alexin and Rixt van der Werff at No. 2, facing Olivia Lincer and Luca Udvardy. Coming back from a 5-2 deficit, the Buffs tied the match, 6-6. The duo fought hard, but fell just short in the tiebreaker, 7-6, to give the Cowgirls the doubles point.

With the forfeit from Oklahoma State at No. 6, Ikedo brought in the first singles victory for the Buffs tying the match 1-1 at the start of singles.

Van der Werff made it two at the No. 2 spot with her straight set win over Anastasiya Komar. The Buff captured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Komar, making the score 2-1 in favor of Colorado.

Just seconds after, the Cowgirls tied it up again at No. 4, with Udvardy notching a matching 6-1 straight set win over Alexin.

Rebec followed with an impressive upset at the No. 3 spot, giving the Buffs a 3-2 lead. Rebec downed No. 22 Nijkamp, in quick 6-2, 6-4, straight sets.

To lock in a CU win, El Sayed brought the fire with another upset for the Buffs, downing No. 53 Lincer. After taking a first set tiebreaker, El Sayed reeled in six more games to make it a straight set win, 7-6, 6-4, securing the 4-2 team finish over the Cowgirls.

"It speaks to the character of the team," said Pham, "And I am really proud of the way they went out and competed."
