Buffaloes Beat Bearcats On Black And Gold Day
April 11, 2026 | Lacrosse
BOULDER – No. 15 Colorado women's lacrosse (9-3, 2-1 Big 12) defeated Cincinnati (8-7, 0-3 Big 12), 10-5, on Black and Gold Day to extend their home record to 6-0.
"Our team has to be ready to battle every single game," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden stated after the game. "I don't think we stepped on the field that way. I thought Cincinnati did, and they played well and did a lot of things well. I think for us, we have to decide who we want to be and how we want to show up the rest of the season."
Senior attacker Maddie Shoup led the game with five goals and junior attacker Rachel Kennedy scored her second consecutive hat trick. Freshman attacker Rowan Edson and junior attacker Teagan Ryan each added a goal of their own. Sophomore goalkeeper Elena Oh had three saves.
Colorado had more draw controls (12-5), groundballs (11-7) and caused turnovers (11-2) than Cincinnati.
How It Happened
The first eight minutes of the game were scoreless until Cincinnati scored at 6:25 (1-0, UC). Shoup quickly responded with a goal to tie the game 30 seconds later (1-1). The Bearcats scored their second goal a minute later, but neither team scored again and the first quarter ended, 2-1 (UC).
Colorado found its momentum in the second quarter, starting with a man-up goal from Kennedy (2-2). Minutes later, she assisted Edson on a goal to put the Buffs in the lead (3-2, CU).
A foul allowed Shoup to score a free-position goal and extended the Black and Gold's lead to two (4-2, CU). Senior midfielder Lily Assini assisted Shoup on the final goal of the half, putting Colorado up by three (5-2, CU).
The second half started with an early goal from Shoup (6-2, CU). At 10:08, she scored again with an assist from junior attacker Jaimey Hill (7-2, CU). Neither team scored for nearly nine minutes, but the Bearcats found the back of the net with just over a minute remaining in the third (7-3, CU).
Senior defender Jess Peluso won the following draw control that allowed Kennedy to assist Ryan on a goal, ending the quarter, 8-3 (CU).
Cincinnati scored twice in the first five minutes of the fourth, but Kennedy answered with two free-position goals to end the Bearcat's run (10-5, CU). Back-to-back saves from Oh kept Cincinnati scoreless for the remaining minutes, and the Buffaloes took the victory, 10-5.
