CU Track & Field Sits In Strong Midseason Position Ahead Of Championship Stretch

April 23, 2026 | Track and Field

BOULDER — With the outdoor track and field postseason quickly approaching, the Colorado Buffaloes are sitting in a strong midseason position marked by top-10 program history performances and a deep group of athletes currently inside NCAA West Regional qualifying range.

In a season already defined by both depth and breakthrough performances, CU has recorded multiple all-time program marks across multiple events, while building momentum toward the championship stretch of the outdoor calendar.

"Our men and women have a lot of positive momentum right now, and we're looking to build on that heading into conference championships," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Sean Carlson said.

That momentum is showing up both in the record books and the national rankings.

HISTORIC MARKS SETTING THE TONE

Colorado has already produced several top-10 all-time program performances this outdoor season, headlined by Abbey Nechanicky, who set the school record in the 10,000m (32:23.93), continuing CU's tradition of national-level strength in the event.

The 10,000m group of Nechanicky, Hannah Prosser, Ashley Jones, and Holly Barker currently ranks No. 4 in the NCAA this week, according to USTFCCCA.

On the men's side, the Buffs' 5000m group of Justine Kipkoech, James Overberg, Tanner Newkirk, and Lukas Haug also sits No. 4 nationally, highlighted by Overberg's recent breakthrough at the Bryan Clay Invitational, where he moved up to No. 10 all-time in program history with a 13:32.53 performance.

On the track, Avery Pearson has emerged as one of the most dynamic athletes on the roster, ranking No. 2 all-time in the 800m (2:00.91) while also holding a No. 5 all-time mark in the 400m (53.90), highlighting her range and championship versatility.

In the distance group, Kole Mathison has delivered one of the most impactful multi-event seasons in the program, ranking No. 3 all-time in the 3000m steeplechase (8:32.42) and No. 8 in the 1500m (3:40.83), giving CU a major scoring threat across multiple championship distances.

The Buffs have also seen strong contributions in the field events, including top-5 program marks from Alaina Fantaski (javelin), Gustavo Alfonso (javelin), and Lucas Williams (hammer throw).

NCAA WEST REGIONAL PICTURE TAKING SHAPE

The next checkpoint for CU athletes is qualification for the NCAA West Preliminary Round, where the top 48 athletes in each event advance. From there, qualifiers move one step closer to earning spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in June.

Several Buffs are currently positioned inside that top-48 threshold across multiple events, with some already well inside the cut line.

BIG PICTURE

With championship season approaching, Colorado's profile is defined by two clear strengths: high-end national contenders at the front of events and significant depth across distance and mid-distance groups.

Several Buffs remain on the edge of qualification, meaning the final weeks of the regular season will be critical in solidifying NCAA West Preliminary entries — and potentially national championship opportunities beyond that.

For now, the trajectory is clear: CU enters the championship stretch carrying both proven results and upward momentum.
