Matt Daniels is in his first year on the Colorado football staff, having joined the program on July 1, 2017 as a graduate assistant working with the defense.

Daniels, 27, is in his first coaching position as he came to the Buffaloes after retiring from the National Football League. An undrafted free agent, he signed with the St. Louis Rams and spent two seasons with the club.  A safety, he moved on to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2014 season and then to the San Diego Chargers for 2015-16, though he spent the last year of his career on injured reserve. He played in a total of seven NFL games.

He graduated from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy in 2012, appearing in 46 career games for the Blue Devils, including 36 consecutive to close his career. He had a tremendous senior season, racking up 126 tackles (four for losses), with 14 passes broken up, two interceptions and a forced fumble. He recorded 324 career tackles (13 for losses), with 31 pass deflections, seven forced fumbles and four interceptions. Daniels, who was named Duke's Carmen Falcone Most Valuable Player, garnered first-team All-ACC and second-team All-America accolades in 2011.

He was born September 27, 1989 in Tucson, Ariz., and graduated from Fayette County High School (Fayetteville, Ga.) where he lettered in football and track and field (he set the school’s single game rushing record of 348 yards). He is married to the former Tiffany Lee.
