Patrick Harrington is in his third season as assistant women's basketball coach, having been named to the post on Sept. 12, 2007.
With a professional resume that touches just about every region in the United States, Harrington, 46, is the co-recruiting coodinator and assists in opponent scouting for the Buffaloes and with camps and clinics. His recruiting efforts paid off as the Buffaloes signed the No. 32 rated class according to ESPN.com's HoopGirlz.
Before arriving in Boulder, Harrington spent two seasons as an assistant women's basketball coach at Oregon State University where he focused on recruiting, scheduling, on court teaching and game preparation during his stint with the Beavers. He joined a program that went just 6-23 in 2004-05, and helped coach the Beavers to a 16-15 mark in 2005-06 and a berth in the postseason WNIT. The 10 game swing in the win column tied for the best among all BCS Division schools in 2006. In 2007 he coached Casey Nash to the Pac-10 Conference scoring title (20 ppg) as she earned first team All Pac-10 honors.
"Patrick is an outstanding fit for our staff," McConnell-Miller said. "He is a relentless recruiter who enhances not only our national but international opportunities. His years of experience allow us, as a Big 12 staff, to grow in player development, opponent scouting and game preparation."
Prior to joining Oregon State, Harrington served four seasons as an assistant men's basketball coach at the University of New Orleans. He was the Privateers' recruiting coordinator and participated in practice planning, game strategies, scouting and player development. While at UNO he recruited Bo McCalebb who would become the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Freshman of the Year and SBC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player as well as Hector Romero who also gained league Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors. Harrington enjoyed three consecutive winning seasons at UNO and was rated among the "Top 5 Assistant Coaches at a Mid Major" by Hoopscooponline.com
Harrington's NCAA Division I coaching experience began in 1997 at the University of Texas-Pan American where he spent two seasons as an assistant men's coach. His recruiting efforts aided the rebuilding of the UTPA program and resulted in their first ever nationally ranked recruiting class. Harrington established, marketed and directed the head coaches' weekly television show and also guided the program's summer basketball camp, fall coaches clinic and the Junior Bronc Program.
Harrington joined the coaching staff at Southern Utah University for the 2000-01 season, which happened to be one of the most memorable seasons in Thunderbirds' NCAA Division I history. He aided in game preparation, scouting and recruiting as SUU went 25-6 overall, won the Mid-Continent Conference title and earned the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.
He spent the 1996-97 season as head men's basketball coach at Newbury College in Brookline, Mass, for a team that was ranked in the NJCAA Top 10 and finished with an overall record of 23-6. While at Newbury, he was also an assistant athletic director where he was directly responsible for overseeing the athletic department's work-study program and assisted the admissions department with financial aid issues, career counseling and college job fairs.
Harrington's coaching career started in the high school ranks, as he was an assistant boys basketball coach at South Boston High School from 1994-96. During his time with South Boston, the team won back-to-back Division I State and Boston City championships compiling an overall record of 49-2 during that span.
A native of Boston, Harrington earned his bachelor's degree in elementary education from Rollins College (Fla.) in 1986 where he lettered in basketball. He was an all-state honorable mention performer in high school and a four-time all-league player who helped his team to the New England Class C title. After graduation from Rollins, he enjoyed a successful career in real estate and development before entering the coaching ranks.
Harrington, and his wife, Lori, have three children - daughters Kelly and Katherine and a son, Patrick II.
