COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER SHOCKS NO. 22 BAYLOR, 3-2
October 17, 1997 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. -The University of Colorado women's soccer team, behind the strength of two second half goals and in front of the largest home crowd of the season, stunned No. 22 Baylor Friday, beating the Bears 3-2 before 1,260 onlookers at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in North Boulder.
Â
The win is Colorado's first ever over a ranked team in the program's two-year, 30-game history.
Â
"It's definitely a big win," head coach Austin Daniels said. "We knew coming in that Baylor would play with two forwards, and we felt those two forwards were among the best in the country. But we thought (Colorado defenders) AUie (Gausman) and Teri (Fildey) could hold their own for us on defense, and they came through."
Â
Baylor opened the game's scoring when forward Courtney Sanders took an assist from Molly Cameron and buried a shot in the left corner of the goal in the game's 17th minute, but Colorado quickly answered, with freshman Andrea Matassa taking an assist from sophomore Shawn Kenyon and powering in a goal through traffic just five minutes later.
Â
The teams went into halftime knotted at one apiece, but Baylor struck again early in the second half when Cameron fired in a score of her own off an assist from Britt Talley in the 52nd minute, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Â
Colorado would tie the score again just IO minutes later, when Kenyon drove in a 20-footer off an assist from Melissa Cartmell, giving the Buffs new life at 2-2 with 28 minutes remaining in the game. The teams traded shots from there until a Baylor hand ball in the box gave Buff senior Donna Holyman a penalty kick in the game's 81 st minute, which she buried in the left corner of the net to give Colorado the 3-2 edge.
Â
Buffalo keeper Sloane Cox and the Colorado defense withstood a Baylor offensive barrage for the game's final eight minutes to secure the win. Cox registered an impressive 11 saves on the day.
Â
Colorado moves to 4-9 overall and 4-3 in the conference with the win, pulling one step closer to a berth in the Nov. 6-9 Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. Baylor drops to 10-4 and 7-3.
Â
"Now we have to refocus," Daniels said. "Texas Tech has four wins right now and we have got to win. We can't afford to relax after a good win --that's the mark of a good team."
Â
The Buffaloes currently stand in fourth place in the Big 12 with the victory, with the top six Big 12 teams qualifying for the conference tournament. A win in Sunday's 1 p.m. MDT contest with Texas Tech would clinch a spot in the tourney for Colorado.
