COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO DENVER, 1-0
October 20, 1998 | Soccer
DENVER -Â The University of Colorado women's soccer team ( 4-10-2, 1-4-1) dropped their fifth consecutive loss to the University of Denver (6-4-2) earlier today at DU Field.
Â
"I thought we created opportunities, but we have got to put them away," said Coach Austin Daniels. "We have got to show composure in front of the goal. We created so many opportunities, but we have got to get the shots on goal. Defensively, I thought that collectively, we did a good job."
Â
The first half was dominated by Denver, as the Pioneers controlled the ball for much of the half and scored in the 23rd minute. Senior Emily Fenley scored on a header near the lower-left post, assisted by Leslie Montgomery. The Buffs were shutout for the fourth consecutive time in the loss. CU's last goal was Oct. 9 at Iowa State when junior Shawn Kenyon scored on the Cyclones in a 2-1 loss.
Â
"In the first half, we sat back and watched DU play around us," said senior goalkeeper Sloane Cox. "We watched balls that we could have won just go by and didn't challenge. The second half was a whole different story and we totally outplayed them. We just could not put the ball in the back of the net."
Â
The Buffs got outstanding defensive play from Sarah Nowfel, Kyley Ellenberger, and Allison Gausman as well as freshman Nadia Kaliszewski. "Nadia came off the bench and was outstanding," said Daniels. Cox had five saves on the day, to bring her season total to 169. She continues to lead the nation in saves per game, currently sitting at 10.93.
Â
Colorado heads to Lubbock, Texas this weekend to face Texas Tech University on Friday, Oct. 16 at 3:00 p.m., then heads to Waco to face No. 17 Baylor on Sunday, Oct. 18 at noon. The Buffs then return home for their final two matches of the regular season the following weekend, facing Kansas on Friday, Oct. 30 at 3:00 p.m., and Missouri on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 :00 p.m. All Colorado women's soccer games are played at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder and admission is free. PVSC is located at the intersection of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder.
