COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER SCORES LATE TO TIE OKLAHOMA STATE, 1-1

October 04, 1998 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (3-5-2, 1-0-1) came back in the final five minutes of the match to tie Oklahoma State University (7-2- 1, 1-0-1) in Big 12 play today. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Cartmell notched the tying goal with 4:22 remaining in regulation.

"I'm a little disappointed that we got behind in the game," said Coach Austin Daniels. "But I am happy we were able to come back and score that goal, especially since it was so late. We are getting to where we want to be. Even though we didn't get the win, we did not lose. We'd prefer to be 2-0 but we're still undefeated in the Big 12."

Oklahoma notched the first goal of the game early in the second half, when senior midfielder Melissa Wykes finished a ball that came off the crossbar to put OSU on top 1-0 at the 51:30 mark of the match. The Cowgirls had several other opportunities to convert that were thwarted by the play of the Colorado defense, as well as Buff senior goalkeeper, Sloane Cox, who notched 11 saves on the day.

Colorado would battle for the duration of the second half, their efforts coming to fruition at the 85:44 mark. Freshman forward Suzy Kiefer won a 50-50 ball in the midfield, which she played forward to Cartmell. Cartmell got around one OSU defender, and then beat the keeper, finishing on the left side of the net with a 15 yard blast.

"We needed to win this game, but a tie is better than a loss," said Cartmell. "We tied this game because we refused to let down and kept battling, despite being down 1-0 so late in the game. We maintained a lot of confidence in ourselves late, and that is why we were able to tie the game. I think we showed a great deal of character today."

The tie proved to be very costly to Colorado, as senior defender Lauren Kulmann went down early in the first period of overtime with a knee injury, and Cox was hit with four minutes remaining in the second period of overtime by OSU's Emily Morgan. Morgan was given a caution for unsportsmanlike conduct for the foul, which came at the 114:38 mark. Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Bassett replaced the injured Cox and saved OSU's lone shot in the remainder of the game.

Colorado hits the road this week to take on Colorado College this Wed., Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. in Colorado Springs.
