UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO SOCCER EARNS FIRST-EVER WIN OVER COLORADO COLLEGE, 1-0

October 07, 1998 | Soccer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team ( 4-5-2, 1-0-1) earned their first ever win over Colorado College in overtime 1-0 today. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Cartmell notched the gamewinning goal at the 95:29 mark of the match, just five minutes into overtime. This also marked the first overtime win for the Buffs this season, and the fastest CU has reached the four-win mark in the program's three-year history.

"It is nice to get a win in overtime on our third try," said Coach Austin Daniels. "I felt we played very well and our reserves did a great job. Playing three games in such a short time span, we tried to save some legs for this weekend, and I really think they stepped up and played well." On an interesting note, this was CU's first-ever win over CC, the school where Daniels got his start as an assistant from 1986-88.

Both teams managed excellent shots on goal in regulation, CC with 15 total shots and CU with nine. Colorado's Shawn Kenyon smacked a shot that was tipped into the crossbar by Tiger goalkeeper Tiffany Baalman to keep the score even at the 72:00 mark of the match, eventually sending the Buffs into their second consecutive overtime match.

It didn't take long once overtime started for the Buffs to finally get on the board. Freshman defender Nadia Kaliszewski earned her first point of her career when she gave Cartmell a short pass 30 yards from the goal. Cartmell turned and fired from 25 yards out, the ball just out of Baalman's reach and dropping down to smack the back of the net with just 5:31 gone in the first period of overtime. It was Cartmell's second goal in as many games.

"We need to keep playing like this and keep improving our quality of play," said Cartmell. "It is so key to maintain 'upward mobility' leading up to an important weekend for us in Big 12 play. I think we played well together, and it was a total team effort to get this win."

Colorado continues their road trip this weekend, next traveling to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State on Friday, Oct. 9 at 3:00 p.m., and then on to Lincoln to face Nebraska on Sun., Oct. 11 at noon. The Buffs return home Friday, Oct. 16 at 4:00 p.m. to face the Texas A&M Aggies. All Colorado women's soccer games are played at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder and admission is free. PVSC is located at the intersection of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder.
