Colorado Edged Out Late 2-1 By Texas

October 17, 1999 | Soccer

AUSTIN, Texas-The University of Colorado women's soccer team (10-7-0, 3-5-0 Big 12) fell late in the 85th minute to the University of Texas (7-7-0, 4-4-0 Big 12) by a score of 2-1 this afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Bassett had eight saves in the game for Colorado.

Abby Gutowski started the scoring in the 12th minute when Bassett deflected a Longhorn cross to the center of the box, where Gutowski shot the ball from 15 yards out into the open net. The Buffs' first legitimate scoring opportunity of the half came in the 20th minute when junior midfielder Maris Dillman played a cross in from the right, and freshman midfielder Tiffany Booth attempted a diving header which went just high of the crossbar.

The Buffs bounced back late in the first half when junior defender Allison Gausman punched in a corner kick with 1 :27 left to play in the half. Sophomore midfielder Heather Zonker knocked in the corner from the left side to the far post, where Gausman fought through the pack in front of the goal to net the game-tying goal.

The Longhorns led in every statistical category in the first half, edging the Buffs in shots (8 to 6) and fouls (6 to 2). Bassett pulled in five saves to Varnadore's two.

Colorado came out of the locker room with momentum, with several scoring opportunities early in the second half. Sophomore Jessica Wollow got through on a pass from Heather Zonker with 19 minutes to play, but missed just wide of the left post. Texas took the lead at the 85:59 mark when junior Nicole Ramirez finished a rebound off the Buffalo near post. The Buffs finished the match with 13 shots to Texas' 18, with Gausman leading CU with two shots.

"I thought we played well enough to get the result, but we didn't get it," said fourth-year head coach Austin Daniels. "We just didn't create enough clear-cut opportunities in the final third ( of the field), but I thought that our midfield and defensive play was descent."

CU now returns home for the final regular season games of the year on Friday, Oct. 22 at 3:00 p.m. against Texas Tech and on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 :00 p.m. against Baylor. All CU home soccer games are held at Pleasant View Soccer Complex and are free to the public.
