CU Hangs On To Top Iowa State 2-1

October 08, 1999 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (10-4-0, 3-2-0 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (9-4-0, 2-3-0 Big 12) by a final score of 2-1 Friday afternoon. With this win, Colorado builds their home winning streak to eight in a row and get their record 10th win of the season.

The Buffs' head coach Austin Daniels was pleased with his team's performance against the tough Iowa State team. "They are a very good team," said Daniels. "It was a fun game to coach and watch. It was a battle. We knew no matter how many goals we could score, they were going to keep battling. They battle right to the end."

The first half was anybody's game until the 37-minute mark when sophomore forward Suzy Kiefer got the Buffs on the board. Kiefer received a through ball from freshman midfielder Tiffany Booth at the midfield line. She dribbled down the field and shot from 15 yards out on the left side. The ball sailed past Cyclone keeper Lynley Hilligoss in the far comer. The goal marked Kiefer's fifth goal of the season and Booth notched her third assist.

After 45-minutes of play, the Buffs led 1-0 despite being outshot 12-8. Hilligoss tallied three saves in the first half while CU keeper Danielle Bassett grabbed six. Colorado took one corner kick while the Cyclones took two. The fouls were even at the half as both teams tallied six.

The Buffs continued scoring in the second half as junior defender Maris Dillman gave the Buffs an insurance goal at 69:27 to put CU up by two. Dillman sped down the field chasing a through ball knocked up field by junior midfielder Zoe Pascoe. She shot on the left side, chipping ISU's keeper. Pascoe's assist marked her collegiate first as well.

The Cyclones refused to be shut out as they got on the board at 87:25. Erica Florez ripped a shot on the left side from 10 yards out that sailed past Bassett in the far corner. Florez tried to tie the game a minute later on a breakaway but was robbed by Bassett, who came off her line to smother her shot.

The Buffs suffered an unfortunate injury as junior starting midfielder Andrea Matassa went down early in the second half. Matassa injured her hamstring and her status is questionable for Sunday's match.

Bassett made two outstanding saves in the last 45 seconds of the game. "I blinked and they were over, "Bassett remarked. "It's all reaction. This win was a big boost for out confidence, especially facing Nebraska. It's a win to show people we're not the team we were last year, we're definitely a team to be reckoned with."

Bassett tallied 10 saves on 26 Cyclone shots while Hilligoss made seven saves on 18 total shots. This win marks the first time in CU history that the Buffs have reached double digits in the win column.

The Buffs continue their homestand on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 :00 p.m. facing No. 4 Nebraska. The game is also autograph day, and the first 500 fans to the game will receive a team poster courtesy of the Daily Camera. They then head to Texas to take on Texas A&M on Friday, Oct. 15 at 6:00 p.m. and University of Texas on Sunday, Oct. 17 at noon. All home games are held at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex and are free to the public.
