CU Comes From Behind To Top Kansas 2-1
August 27, 1999 | Soccer
Lawrence, Kan. -Â The University of Colorado women's soccer team (1-0-0, 1-0-0) came from behind to top the University of Kansas 2-1 Friday afternoon. The win gave Colorado their first come-Âfrom-behind win in school history, as well as their first winning record in school history.
Â
"It really came down to a full commitment by the team," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We were able to come from behind to win, which is not something we have done in the past, which shows good character. They get a nice reward for all their work not only this preseason, but also this past spring and summer."
Â
The Buffs fell behind late in the first half when Melanie Schroeder scored on a free kick taken from 25 yards out. Schroeder struck the ball low and hard directly into the Colorado wall, where it was deflected in. Buffs goalkeeper Danielle Bassett was screened out of the play, and when the ball changed direction after the deflection, she was beaten to her left.
Â
Colorado and Kansas each had eight shots in the first half, with Bassett recording three saves and Kansas' keeper Betsy Pollard also notching three saves in the half.
Â
The second half saw a heated battle develop on the field, with Colorado and Kansas combining for 16 fouls. Kansas threatened to extend its lead to two when forward Katie Leats got free of Colorado sweeper Aimee Bugay, but sophomore keeper Danielle Bassett made a diving save of Leats' shot in her first-ever start in the Buffalo net.
Â
CU evened the game at 1-1 when junior defender Allison Gausman crushed a free ball into the upper right-hand corner of the Kansas net in the 67th minute. Sophomore Susan Kiefer sent in a corner kick from the right side, which was deflected off junior Sarah Nowfel, and two Kansas defenders. Gausman seized her opportunity and buried the ball in the back of the net.
Â
The score remained tied until the 2:22 mark of the game, when junior forward and team captain Melissa Cartmell gave the Buffs the lead for good. Senior forward and captain Shawn Kenyon played a through ball to Cartmell, which the junior took 25 yards for the game-winner.
Â
The Buffs finished the game with 18 shots, with Cartmell leading the game with seven. Bassett earned the win with nine saves on 18 KU shots.
Â
Colorado's next travels to the University of Missouri to face the Tigers at noon Sunday. The Buffs will open the 1999 home season on Friday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m. against Alabama-Birmingham. All CU game are at Pleasant View Soccer Complex at the corner of Foothills Pkwy. and the Diagonal Highway. Admission and parking are free.
