Colorado Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker At Iowa State
October 28, 2001 | Soccer
AMES, Iowa -- The Colorado soccer team fought extreme winds more than the Iowa State Cyclones before dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker at the Iowa State Soccer Complex here Sunday.
Â
The loss drops the Buffs to 2-11-2 overall, and winless in Big 12 play, 0-7-2. Iowa State improves to 5-8-2/3-4-2.
Â
Clear, sunny skies were the facade to the winds that played against the Buffs and resulted in a scoreless opening stanza and Iowa State with the edge in shots (7-4) and shots on goal (4-0) while both teams each had a pair of corners after 45 minutes of play. In goal, Danielle Bassett had four saves before lending second half keeper duty to teammate Sara Erskine.
Â
Playing with the wind as a 12th teammate the second half, Colorado dominated the second half with six shots on goal to ISU's four. Hasselman was forced to make all of her six saves in the second 45-minutes of play.
Â
The Buffs nearly took the game's first lead with back-to-back shots in the goal box at the 26:53 mark of the second half. A Jen Thais attempt was blocked by Erin Weldon, and a follow-up by Suzy Kiefer was saved by keeper Karen Hasselman.
Â
But it was Iowa State that played off the Buffs' offensive spurt and the Cyclones' Nicole Wilcox that got the ball past midfield a minute later and worked past Colorado's Aimee Bugay and Heather Hawkins to beat Erskine and place the ball into the lower right corner of the goal to break the silence and take the 1-0 lead with 25:59 left in the game.
Â
The Cyclones almost made it 2-0 when Wilcox's shot with 11 :44 left hit the right post rebounding the ball back into play when just seconds later Sara Kovarik's follow-up went passed Erskine and just wide of the goal as did Wilcox's second shot in a minute's span that also sailed wide-right.
Â
Despite Colorado's offensive output that found the Buffs out-shooting the Cyclones 4-1 in the final 6:30 of the game, it was the Cyclones that would leave the field with the win.
Â
Out of contention for the Big 12 Conference Tournament, Colorado closes out the 2001 campaign Friday, Nov. 2 at Texas Tech in a 6 p.m. (MST) kickoff.
