October 05, 2001 | Soccer
STILLWATER. Okla. -Coming off the heels of one of their best results of the season at the hands of No. 9 Texas A&M on Sunday, the Colorado soccer team had an emotional letdown here Friday, dropping a 3-1 decision to an Oklahoma State team also trying to find itself.
Â
The loss drops the Buffs to 1-6-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the second weekend of Big 12 play. Oklahoma State gets the season equalizer and improves to 5-5/1-2. The loss is cu·s first to osu since the 1997 campaign.
Â
"It's too bad after a game like A&M to let down and have three goals scored against us in less than 20 minutes," said junior midfielder Meghan Swanzy.
Â
Colorado co-captain Whitney Peterson mirrored Swanzy's sentiments, "We took a baby step against A&M, but losing to OSU was a huge step back."
Â
Oklahoma State would score three first-half goals in a span of 7:02, a lead that Colorado wouldn't recover from. Jolene Schweitzer put the Cowgirls on the scoreboard just prior to the 11-minute mark on a breakaway that saw her work her way around Aimee Bugay, fake Colorado keeper Whitney Peterson and lay the ball into the middle of the open net. Less than five minutes later. Courtney Robb pulled Peterson off the line and put one over Peterson's head. It originally looked as if it were headed over the post. but the ball fell just below the bar and behind Peterson. Joanne Edwards recorded her third goal of the season when took a low, hard shot to the right post forcing Peterson to dive left. but missing the ball that deflected off the post.
Â
Down 3-0 at halftime, Colorado avoided being shutout for the first time this season when freshman Jen Thais netted her team-leading third goal of the season with 14:22 left in the game when she struck a low shot that forced osu keeper Kat Doud to make a diving save. The ball rebounded off Doud's hands and Thais put back the rebound.
Â
Colorado's road swing continues Sunday when the Buffs play at Oklahoma in a noon (MST) kickoff.
Â
"It's going to test the character of this team if we can get passed this," added Peterson. "We can't let the way we played tonight define our season."
