Colorado Gets Blanked By Oklahoma, 4-0

October 07, 2001 | Soccer

NORMAN, Okla. - In dropping a 4-0 decision at Oklahoma here Sunday, the Colorado soccer team was shutout for just the first time of the 2001 season.

The loss drops the Buffs to-1-7-1/0-3-1 in Big 12 action. Oklahoma improves to 9-2/3-1 in league play.

Colorado was outshot 26-4 and 15-1 in shots on goal en route to the Buffs' worst loss since a 4-0 defeat at then-No. 4 Nebraska last season. The shutout ends the Buffs' season streak of eight games without being blanked which was a program best.

In search of an offensive shakeup, cu keeper Whitney Peterson turned field player in the first half while junior goaltender Danielle Bassett started her first game of the season. She had four saves and allowed just one goal when Oklahoma's Logan Womack broke the Sooner single-season school record for goals when she netted her ninth of the 2001 campaign just 12:08 into the contest. By the end of the half, the Buffs had failed to get a single shot off while playing 10 Oklahoma balls.

Colorado's offense was somewhat sparked in the second stanza when both Heather Zonker and Ellen Falender each managed a pair of shots each with Zonker forcing Sooner keeper Catherine Wade to make her lone save of the game.

The Buff defense took a beating in the second half allowing three Oklahoma goals when Peterson returned to the goal box. The Sooners' Krissy Dawson recorded back-to-back goals t0 out OU up 3-0 at the 63:42 mark on a direct kick and just 12 minutes at 75 minutes straight up on a penalty kick, a first for a CU opponent this season. Womack put an exclamation on the game when her put her second goal of the game passed Peterson with 9:38 left on the clock.

What may hurt more than a pair of losses on the weekend are injuries to key Colorado starters. Forward Suzy Kiefer re-aggravated a knee injury suffered during preseason drills in the Oklahoma state game and defender Aimee Bugay suffered a first-degree AC shoulder sprain during the first half of today's contest. Both players will be evaluated when they return to campus and their playing status determined then.

A frustrated Colorado team returns to the friendly confines of the Pleasant View Soccer Complex Friday and Sunday when they face Missouri (4 p.m.) and Kansas (1 p.m.), respectively. Friday's game will mark Bill Hempen's 300th as a head coach.

"We need to find that drive and desire that made us want to play soccer when we were five and six years old," said CU co-captain Kendall Pata.
