Colorado Soccer Wins 2-1 At Wyoming On Last Second Goal
September 02, 2001 | Soccer
LARAMIE, Wyo. -Â Suzy Kiefer's second goal with 54 seconds remaining in regulation secured a 2-1 Colorado win over Wyoming in front of 437 fans at the Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer Stadium here Sunday.
Â
The win gives Colorado its first on the early season and puts the Buffs at 500 on the season with a 1-1 record. With the loss the Cowgirls fall to 1-1.
Â
On the scoreboard first, Wyoming made a pair of runs on goal, scoring on the latter. The initial attempt at 34:46 of the opening half came off a Renee Minero free kick resulted in a Sara Erskine save, but 31 seconds later Sancy Florquist took the ball from Lindsey Vossbrink for a header that deflected off Colorado's Jen Thais in the left corner.
Â
Colorado had offensive opportunities with back-to-back corner kicks within 44 seconds of each other to tie the game, but shots by Thais and Lindsey Galas sailed wide and high.
Â
Despite an offensive spark at the end of the half, the Buffs found themselves on the short end of the score (1-0), shots (7-4) and corner kicks (2-1 ), and failed to capitalize on 11 Cowgirl fouls. The half was all Heather Zonker who took three of CU's four shots on goal.
Â
"We weren't ready to play," said Head coach Bill Hempen.
Â
The Buffs invaded Wyoming territory at the 36:06 mark of the second half, but it wasn't until 33:33 that CU's Suzy Kiefer registered the tying goal, her first of the season, when she beat three white jerseys at the top of the box to put the ball past Lori Scheider.
Â
An opportunity to score at 16:25 was a cross from Kiefer to Meghan Swanzy whose header attempt went wide left. Colorado would keep Wyoming on its heels the next 2:15 with just one shot on goal attempted. A chance to take the lead was presented with 12:59 left in the game when Heather Zonker cleared a ball from Wyoming territory down field to Jessica Wollow whose shot on goal forced Scheider to come out of goal to make the save. An equally dramatic save by CU's Whitney Peterson occurred with 10:17 remaining in the game.
Â
After offensive exchanges and the clock winding down, Colorado's Danielle Bickley came up with the ball with 56 second remaining and crossed the ball from right to left in front of the goal where Kiefer played it off the left post for the score and the final go ahead.
Â
Colorado continues its road campaign Friday and Sunday, September 7 and 9 at San Francisco and Fresno State, respectively. The Buffs will look to avenge last year's 1-0 loss to USF in Boulder while the meeting with the Bulldogs will be both programs' first. The Buffs return to Boulder Wednesday, Sept. 12 vs. Denver.
Â
"We'll need to work on our free kicks for next weekend," added Hempen. "It's one thing to talk about taking one, it's another to execute. We'll need to get them more prepared."
