Erin Kerr Runner-Up Via Playoff In Heather Farr Memorial
October 08, 2002 | Women's Golf
Day 1
BROOMFIELD, Colo. - Led by senior Erin Kerr's 1-over-par 73, the Colorado women's golf team turned in a season-best first-round 301 and trail tournament leader Nevada by three strokes after 18 holes of the fifth annual Heather Farr Memorial Invitational here Monday."Without playing our best round of golf, we're right in this," said head coach Anne Kelly. "That really shows the kind of depth we have."
Nevada leads the team race with a 298, just three strokes ahead of Colorado (301) and four strokes ahead of Idaho (302). Also in the hunt for bragging rights are Colorado State and Denver, both teams turning in a first-round 307. The Vandals' Maria Valente and CSU's Lynette Duran, playing as an individual, are atop the leaderboard with a 1-under-par 71 after 18 holes, while CU's Kerr is tied for third with Nicole Keller (Idaho), Alan Condon and Jennie Peek of Nevada.
Kelly feels that the tournament is anyone's for the taking, "The first five spots are jammed up. Really, any of the top teams have a chance at it."
In part to an eagle on the sixth hole, Kerr was 1-under at the turn before approaching the Sunshine course, her back nine. She ran into some trouble on 13, a 299-yard par 4 as she tried to hit the green off the tee, but instead ended up in the hazard forcing her to re-tee and card a double bogey on the hole. After that she had one bogey then parred-out for the 1-over score.
With a 2-over-par 74, Jolene Fellhauer is in position for her best-ever finish in the October annual as she currently has a share of seventh. Allison Rella has erased five strokes from her first-round score a year ago to turn in a 77 and sits in 18th with teammate Maria Persson-Gulda who rounded out Colorado's scorin.g
"Alli is playing better than she scored," said Kelly. "She hit the ball really well today and just needs one of those days when everything falls into place."
Joey Stetser is in an eight-way jam for 40th but is in good company with teammates Lynn Ann Moretto and Jessie Malcom (both playing as individuals), as all three carded a 79.
"Joey had it rough on the front nine, but fought hard on the back. She's been our workhorse leading up to this tournament." Also playing as individuals, Robin Worthington (83) and Kimber Westbrook (91) are in 62nd and 88th, respectively.
The second, and final round of the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational will tee off with a shotgun start on the Vista & Sunshine courses of the Omni lnterlocken at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Day 2
BROOMFIELD, Colo. - Colorado's Erin Kerr was the individual runner-up following a two-hole playoff with Idaho's Nicole Keller and the Buffs finished three strokes off the lead to finish third in their own Heather Farr Memorial Invitational here Tuesday. Both Kerr and Keller carded a 36-hole 73-71-144 forcing the playoff on the Sunshine Course. After both players landed in the rough off the tee box, they both ended in bunkers then both 2-putt for the bogey on the par-4 first hole, a hole they had both parred earlier in the day, and Kerr, birdied on Monday. The first-hole bogeys forced play to advance to the second hole where Keller parred before Kerr, in her first-ever playoff situation, could get out of a bunker on her second shot as off the tee she had a bad lie on the left side of the fairway.
"I barely got it out (of the rough)", said Kerr, who was 3-over-par after five holes and finished the day 1-under to tie her best ever finish in a collegiate tournament. "I was choking down on my clubs and hitting the ball harder."
Denver went from a share of fourth after Monday's first round and carded a tournament-low 296 today to jump three places and take the team title with a 36-hole 603. Nevada, the team leader after 18, finished just a stroke behind the Pioneers at 604, followed by the Buffs with a 303-303-606.
It's the fourth time in five years that Colorado had finished within three strokes of winning their own tournament as they trailed Nebraska last year by a stroke, finished second in 2000 by three strokes and by just a pair in '98.
"I think we just put a lot of pressure on ourselves to win our own tournament", added Kerr. "That's been the case the last three
years."
Colorado had started the second day from behind as head coach Anne Kelly had to disqualify Allison Rella's first round 77 and count Joey Stetser's 79 after Rella, commended all day for her integrity, realized that she had signed an incorrect scorecard after Monday's round. The error was reported late Monday night and dropped CU from second (301) to third (303) to start the final round of play.
Then the Buffs started the day slow as Kelly had her team in fifth or sixth after the turn where they made up some ground for the second round 303, "We didn't get off to a good start on the front nine, but made one of the biggest comeback I've ever seen a CU team make. Everyone just gutted it up and just started playing some great golf. We did a good job yesterday putting ourselves in a position to win, but I think we just tried to hard on the front nine."
Jolene Fellhauer finished as CU's No. 2 player today, carding a second-round 78 for a share of 16th. Fellhauer had one of the team's biggest front to back nine comebacks as she was 6-over on the front nine, capped by hitting the hazard off her second shot on the ninth hole, having to take the drop from in front of the ravine, only to get her approach shot within inches of the cup for the bogey.
She would end up parring the back nine for the 6-over day.
Maria Perrson-Gulda finished in 24th with a two-day 77-78-155 and Joey Stetser would round out CU's scorecard with a 79- 83-155 for a share of 53rd. Despite accepting the DQ, Rella was able to shave a stoke off her first round score and card a 76 Tuesday. Playing as individuals, Jessie Malcolm placed 62nd (79-85-164), Robin Worthington 72nd (83-86-169) and Kimber Westbrook, 84th (91- 87-178). Lynn Ann Moretto, who was in 40th after a first-round 79, could not compete today due to illness and withdrew.
With four tournaments played in five weeks, the Buffs will take the next three weekends off before playing in the Landfall Tradition Women's Golf Championship in Wilmington, N.C. on Nov. 1-2. It will mark just the second time that the women's golf program will travel to the right coast for a tournament, first since the 1994-95 season.
"Fall break comes at a very good time," said Kelly. "We need to hit it hard the last two fall tournaments then get prepared for the spring."
