Volleyball Wins Second Straight
November 08, 2002 | Volleyball
BOULDER - Monique Gerlach had 12 kills and hit .212 as the Colorado women's volleyball team swept Iowa State in three games, 30-21, 30-20, 30-19 at the Coors Events Center Saturday night. It is Colorado's second straight win after three consecutive losses in Big 12 competition.
"The girls played hard and executed well," said assistant coach Jil Thomason who is filling in for Pi'i Aiu. "We have had four good matches lately and hopefully this is a peak time for us because it is a great time to be peaking."
Colorado (13-12, 7-8 Big 12) hit above .200 in all three games and it was the second time this season they defeated Iowa State (10-17, 1-14 Big 12) as they beat them in four games in Ames, Iowa on Oct. 23.
It looked as if Gerlach was going to reach the 1,000 mark early in the match as she collected five kills in game one and six in game two. However, Iowa State limited the Buffaloes to a match-low 10 kills in the third game, with Gerlach only getting one of them.
Maragda Santillana recorded nine kills on the night and Elizabeth Gower paced the Buffalo offense with 37 assists. Gerlach was two digs shy of a double-double.
The Nov. 13 matchup with Missouri will be extra special for Colorado as it is a chance for them to win three matches in a row for the first time since mid-September, and it will be the return of Aiu, who has been in Hawaii attending the funeral of his father.
"It will be an easy transition when (Aiu) returns. We have similar coaching styles and the girls will jump right back into it," Thomason said. "They don't care who is coaching, they just want to win."
Missouri, who is third in the Big 12 behind Nebraska and Kansas State, handed Colorado a 3-0 loss on Sept. 28 in Boulder.
