Colorado Golf Finishes Seventh At Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic

September 10, 2002 | Women's Golf

Day 1

FORT COLLINS - Colorado senior Erin Kerr shot a 2-over-par 146 after two rounds while the Buffs, as a team, shot a 304-305 and are in sole possession of seventh place with a 609 at their annual season kickoff, the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic here Monday.

"We played pretty well, but did struggle on a couple of par-5s," said head coach Anne Kelly. "It had rained last night and today was overcast and pretty cool... great playing weather."

Baylor and host Colorado State share the lead after 36 holes, with both schools carding identical 293-291 rounds for a two round score of
584. Nebraska is just 5 strokes off the lead at 589 followed by Nevada (595,)Denver (600), San Francisco (607) and Colorado (609). Colorado State's Lynette Duran and Nebraska's Sarah Sasse are the individual leaders with a 6-under-par 138.

Kerr had eight birdies the first round, and even had to count a triple and double bogey, but still shot par on the first 18 and a 2-over on the second on the par-72 cours.e Sophomore Allison Rella has taken six strokes off her 36-hole score from this tournament a year ago and is just 4- over par after carding a 75-73 in the opening rounds.

Kelly was most impressed with the play of sophomore Joey Stetser. "Joey has made some big, big improvements over the summer," complimented Kelly.  "She was a little tentative coming in and didn't seem to trust hersel.f But she played a solid 27 holes today... just struggled on the last nine." Stetser , who played as an individual in this tournament a year ago, shot a 75-82 and is five strokes ahead of where she was in this tournament a year ago.

Traditionally strong in this season opener, senior Jolene Fellhauer found herself struggling today.  A year ago she finished fourth with a 71-72-74-217 tournament score.  A year later she shot an 87-76 today. "This is Jolene's course," said Kelly.  "She's had a good history here, so I was surprised to see her struggle so much the first round.  But she found her game and really came back in the second."

Senior Lynn Ann Moretto, who also had a strong showing in this tournament in '01, was also showing signs of slow start with an 82-86-
168.

The third and final round will be played Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

"We just need alow fourth score. We can't count an 82," said Kelly on what the Buffs need to do on Tuesday. "Any of these five players are capable of shooting 3 and 4-under par. If we can get three to do that, we'll be in pretty good shape."

Day 2

FORT COLLINS - Colorado shot a final round 303, and combined with Monday's 304-305 first and second rounds finished in seventh, matching their standing after Monday's rounds, with a 54-hole 912 at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic here Tuesday.

"We played just about the same as we did yesterday," said head coach Anne Kelly. "We didn't count an 82 like we did Monday, but we didn't have a 72 (par) to count either."

Baylor shot a final round 292 to host Colorado State's 302 and broke the tie for the tournament win with a three-round 876, edging the Rams by 10 strokes. Nebraska and Nevada share third with an 896 followed by Denver (897), San Francisco (907) and Colorado (912). Nebraska's Sarah Sasse (209) edged CSU's Lynette Duran (209) in a playoff for medallist honors.

Senior Erin Kerr struggled with her short game in the third and final round, but still managed a 5-over-par 77 on the 6,036-yard course. "She was striking the ball really well, and once she gets those putts to fall, she'll be where we need her to be... hitting par."

Sophomore Allison Rella also carded a final round 77, an impressive recovery after being +7 at the turn, and her two-day total 225 put her in 17th.  Classmate Joey Stetser continued to impress Kelly today, shaving seven strokes from her second round 82, Stetser rebounded with a final round 75 and her 232 put her in a share for 33rd and seven strokes ahead of where she finished a year ago as a freshman.

Makingthe team's biggest first to third round improvement was senior Jolene Fellhauer.  After carding an 87-76 Monday, she turned in a team-low 2-over-par 74 following toda'ys round and improved from 68th on Monday to 54th today.

Senior Lynn Ann Moretto, who also had astrong showing in this tournament in '01, also rebounded from a slow start Monday. Moretto turned in a 79 today after an 82-86 showing in the first two rounds, respectively. Her 247 put her in 74th in the final individual standings.

Colorado will continue its fall schedule when they play at the Oregon State/Shanico Invitational, Sept. 16-17, in Corvallis, Ore. Two years ago the Buffs finished 12th in that Invitational, with then-freshman Jo Pritchard turning in Colorado's low score, a 235 over the 54-hole invite.

"This was not the start that I envisioned," said Kelly. "I thought we would be in contention to win this tournament, and we weren't.
But we learned a lot and hopefully we'll use this to push ourselves harder."
