CU's Fellhauer Cards School Record 67 At Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate
September 24, 2002 | Women's Golf
Day 1
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. - Led by Erin Kerr's 3-over-par 75 in the opening round, the Colorado women's golf team had seven players among the top 25 and shot 308 as a team to sit in third place after 18 holes of the Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club here Monday.Â
In her fourth-lowest round of the early fall season, Kerr is in a four-way share of fifth place with Louise Kenney (Iowa State), Kelly Schaub (Denver) and Kari Broshko (Denver), who is playing as a individual.
Â
Paced by Leanne Owens' 1-under-par 71 which leads all individuals, Iowa State leads the team standings with a first-round 295, a six stroke advantage over host Denver and a 13-stroke edge over Colorado.
Â
The Colorado threesome of Allison Rella, Lynn Ann Moretto and Maria Persson-Gulda (playing as an individual), each carded a 5-over-par 77 and are in a seven-way tie for 13th. Rella turned in five three-putts, but capitalized on the course's par 5 holes where she said she was 2-under. "The par 5s were the strongest part of my game today," said Rella. "I was really good from about 100 yards in and had made two 5-foot putts for birdies."
Â
"It's a short course, so you can save yourself with a lot of birdie opportunities",said Persson-Gulda who is second among all individuals playing.
Â
Joey Stetser carded a 7-over-par 79 to round out Colorado's scoring and was followed by Jolene Fellhauer's 80 which failed to contribute towards the team's score for only the second time this season. Freshman Jessie Malcolm also hit 80 in her first collegiate tournament. Malcolm was the second of four Buff individuals as was Robin Worthington (85) and Kimber Westbrook (89).
Â
The consensus by the players and head coach Anne Kelly is that the greens were faster than what they've been practicing on at the Omni lnterlocken and that could be the one area to focus on during tomorrow's second, and final round which tees off with an 8:30 shotgun start.
Â
"We need to take care of our birdie opportunities and cut down on three-putts,"said Kelly on what her team needs to do to move up even further in the team standings. "Sure they're faster than what we've been practicing on, but you've got to be able to adjust to different conditions."
Day 2
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. - Colorado senior Jolene Fellhauer carded a school-record 67 in the second, and final, round of the Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate here Tuesday while classmate Erin Kerr (75-71-146) finished as the individual runner up, to lead Colorado to a third-place team finish with a 36-hole 599.Â
Fellhauer's 67 was the lowest single round score of the 36-hole Intercollegiate, and was 13 strokes off her first round 80. Â Her new school record bettered current teammate Lynn Ann Moretto and former Buff Michelle Thomas' single round low of 69. Â It also catapulted her from 23rd after Monday's first round to fourth, tying her best individual finish in a tournament with her fourth place effort in last year's season opener, the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins.
Â
Kerr's second-place finish ties her best finish, as she was the individual runner up in this tournament a year ago and at the Mountain View Classic in the spring of '01.
Â
Colorado's second round 291 is the Buffs' best tournament round since their school record 286 in the Heather Farr Memorial in Broomfield last October where they finished just one stroke behind Nebraska, just as painfully close as today's four strokes back from Iowa State.
Â
"Our 297 in Oregon was a great score because it was such a tough course," said head coach Anne Kelly, "but this was by far our most complete round of the season. I swear, when they all come together at the same time we'll shoot a 275."
Â
Iowa State's Leanne Owens followed-up her 1-under-par 71 first round with an even par 72 today to claim medalist honors and pace the Cyclones (295-300) to the team title with a slim three-stroke lead over Denver (301-297-598) and four stroke lead over the Buffs.
Â
The Buffs placed all five players, and four scorers in the top 20, with Allison Rella matching her first round score (77-77-154) to finish 16th while Lynn Ann Moretto and Joey Stetser, and individual Maria Persson-Gulda all carded a 36-hole 163 for a share of 19th. Also playing as individuals, Jessie Malcom (80-83-163) finished 29th while Robin Worthington (85-82-167) and Kimber Westbrook (89-89-178) finished 36th and 42nd, respectively.
Â
"This was such a comeback, and this is still a talented enough group to win more than one tournament. Unfortunately today, we were a few strokes short," concluded Kelly.
Â
The Buffs will have a week off before they host the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational, Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 7-8 at the Omni lnterlocken. Monday's 18 holes will start with tee times, beginning at 8 a.m,. on the 1st and 10th tees of the Sunshine/Vista tournament course while Tuesday's shotgun start will begin at 8:30 a.m.
