BUFFS BLOW BY WYOMING, 71-39

December 28, 2003 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER, Colo. ? Tera Bjorklund had 16 points and six rebounds to lead No. 13 Colorado to its sixth straight victory, 71-39 over Wyoming on Sunday.

Kate Fagan added 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers, for Colorado (9-1). The Buffaloes defeated Wyoming for the 13th consecutive time.

“I thought we came out with a lot of focus,” head coach Ceal Barry said. “I felt like our offensive game in the first half was as good as we've had this season.”

Ashley Elliott led Wyoming (1-7) with 12 points. Kristen Lenhardt had 10 points and the Cowgirls, who last beat Colorado on Dec. 13, 1989, shot a dismal 29 percent.

Bjorklund played only 12 minutes in the second half and scored five points early in the period as Colorado maintained a 29-point lead.

With the Buffaloes sitting down most of their starters and Elliott sinking two 3-pointers and scoring 11 points for Wyoming, the Cowgirls got as close as 53-27 with 11:15 left.

“I really wanted to get the younger players in there,” Barry said of the Buffs' second-half strategy. “I had three freshmen and a sophomore playing out there. Randie Wirt doesn't need game experience, Kate Fagan doesn't need game experience, Tera Bjorklund doesn't need game experience, so I think the biggest thing was I wanted to get those younger players more experience.”

Colorado's reserves pitched in 24 points with freshman guard Leslie Howard leading the charge, chipping in eight points, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Colorado shot 55 percent in building a 43-12 lead by halftime. Wyoming was 5-for-24 shooting in the first period and managed only a 3-pointer by Lenhardt in the first eight minutes.
