BUFFS SEND SYRACUSE HOME WITH 80-45 DEFEAT

December 30, 2003 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER, Colo. ? Emily Waner tied her career high in points with 17 and added a game-high five assists to lead the No. 13 Colorado Buffaloes to an 80-45 victory over Syracuse on Tuesday night at the Coors Events Center.

A trio of Buffaloes -- Randie Wirt, Tera Bjorklund and Kate Fagan -- added 14 points each as Colorado (10-1) drove its winning streak to six games. The win marks the Buffs fourth 10-1 or better start under head coach Ceal Barry.

“I was very pleased with the way we played,” Barry said. “I felt our bench played very well. Our young players are starting to come along a little bit more.”

Behind Waner, the Buffaloes bench scored 32 points.

Rochelle Coleman led all scorers with 22 points, but her effort wasn't enough to lift a depleted Orangewomen (3-5) team to the victory.

Syracuse suited just seven players for the game after April Jean, Marchele Campbell, Tierra Jackson and Tracy Harbut were suspended for a violation of a team academic policy. The players did not make the trip to Colorado.

The game was close for the first 15 minutes, but after a 20-20 tie at the 6:57 mark of the first half, Colorado pulled away with a 23-0 run over the final 2:41 of the first half and the first 5:41 of the second.

Colorado led at the break, 39-25.

Barry began to rest her starters as time wound down in the second half. Bjorklund came out of the game seven minutes into the frame and would not return. Other Buffaloes starters would follow and for the second consecutive game, Colorado's young bench saw valuable time.

Making her season debut, Cecily Jones entered the game with just under a minute left to play and scored her only point on a free throw with under five seconds to play.

Veronica Johns-Richardson saw her first action after a two game lay-off during which she rested a stress reaction in her left foot and six points and four rebounds in her 21 minutes of play.

Colorado returns to the court at 7 p.m. Saturday to take on Buffalo at home.
