Buffs Net Win No. 20
February 26, 2003 | Women's Basketball
AMES, Iowa - The Colorado Buffaloes completed their season sweep of the Iowa State Cyclones with a 79-71 victory at the Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday night.
The win was the 20th for the Buffs this season (20-5, 10-4 Big 12) while the Cyclones dropped to 10-14 overall, 5-9 in the conference.
Junior center Tera Bjorklund led the Buffs scoring 22 points in her 40 minutes of play. Junior point guard Maria Billingsley had a career night, adding 17 points to the winning effort while senior forward Linda Lapped celebrated her 23rd birthday with 16 points and senior forward Sabrina Scott added 12 for the Buffs.
The teams traded baskets for much of the first half and it was the Cyclones who headed to the break with a two-point advantage at 30-28.
The Buffs would come out with hot hands to begin the final frame, outscoring the Cyclones 23-8 in the first seven minutes of the second half to grab a lead they would never relinquish.
The closest Iowa State would come was within four, on two occasions-the last coming with just under a minute to play as the Buffs led 75-71.
Two Lappe free throws and a Lappe layup in the closing minute would put the game out of reach as the Buffs beat the Cyclones in Ames for the first time since the 1996-97 season.
Cyclones guard Lindsey Wilson would do all she could to keep Iowa State in the game, scoring 41 points on the night, breaking Colorado records for points allowed in a half and in a game. The previous record was 23, half, and 40, game, both set by Renee Kelly of Missouri on Jan. 24, 1987.
The only other Cyclone in double-figures was Anne O'Neil, who finished with 11.
The Buffs now turn their attention to their final home tilt against Kansas State. Game time is 7 p.m. Saturday at the Coors Events Center. The Buffs will bid farewell to seniors Lappe, Scott and Di Spencer prior to tip-off.
