Warfield-Ruffato Spears 4th In Jav
May 18, 2003 | Track and Field
AUSTIN - The University of Colorado track & field team participated in day two of the 2003 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships here Sunday night. Several Buffalo runners got through to final rounds on Monday, and freshman Hannah Warfield-Ruffato took fourth in the women's javelin for CU's scoring on the day.
Both the men's and women's teams are in eighth place overall, with the men scoring 10 points so far and the women seven.
"I think we had a pretty good day today," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "We had quite a few people advancing. Many people come here and fail. For freshman to come here and succeed is a sign of very good things to come over the next couple of years.
Warfield-Ruffato earned CU's first women's scoring in a field event with her heave of 152-07 in the javelin, which secured her the fourth spot on the podium. The mark was a new personal best for the freshman, with a previous personal record of 150-05, and also the third best throw in CU history.
In other field events action, freshman Amber Metoyer threw a personal best 45-05.50 in the shot put, but it wasn't enough to advance to finals as she finished first in her heat, 10th overall. Brandon Johnson took 11th in the long jump with his leap of 20-07.00 in his first Big 12 Outdoor Meet.
"Real good throw by Hannah," said Wetmore. "I'm impressed when people come here and PR. Middle and long distance runners don't have much of a chance in these conditions, but still the conditions aren't ideal for throwers who have a 90-minute event that takes place out in the beating hot sun. So for Hannah to PR, and score so well as a freshman, for Amber to PR and just miss as a freshman is good. We had a lot of that today, people in ninth and 10th just missing the finals."
The first events of the day for CU were the qualifying rounds of the 1,500 meter run. Sophomore Sara Gorton won the women's first heat in a time of 4:26.47, easily advancing to the finals. Freshman Bret Schoolmeester took second in the men's first heat of the 1,500 in 3:49.88, while senior and defending champion Jorge Torres was first in the third heat in 3:49.16. Both are through to Sunday's final.
In hurdles action, freshman AK Ikwuakor advanced to the finals in both the 110 and 400 hurdles. His time of 52.83 was fourth in his heat, while he took third in his 110 hurdles heat in 14.10, a major personal record from his previous best of 14.45. Deneeka Torrey advanced to the finals of the women's 400 hurdles in 62.61, good for fourth in her heat.
"We're not sitting real high in team scores," said Wetmore. "But we do have some people through to tomorrow. We'll accumulate some pretty good points tomorrow and a lot of good things in the future."
