GOLF'S HOCH SETS FRESHMAN-BEST MARK

September 30, 2003 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo.? With a second place finish at the Ron Moore Women's Classic here Tuesday, Hannah Hoch turned in the highest finish by a Colorado freshman in the 10-year history of the program and the second-best finish overall with a 36 hole 74-77-151 while the Buffs finished fourth in the team standings on the Highlands Ranch Golf Club course.

Just one stroke shy of forcing a playoff, Hoch shares runner-up honors with Nebraska's Stephanie Ruiz (79-72-151) as the pair finished behind Denver's Emily Hoeper (77-73-150).

Nebraska overcame Iowa State to take team bragging rights, as the Huskers totaled 613 to finish three strokes ahead of Denver and Iowa State's 616 while Colorado fell from third to fourth with a 36-hole 626.  The Buffs finished four strokes ahead of Wyoming (630), Denver's B team (642, Northern Colorado (650) and North Texas (653).

With a 75-78-153, Allison Rella finished in seventh, just three strokes behind Hoeper for the second-best finish of her collegiate career, third top-10 effort.  Colorado's only other top-20 finish was Robin Worthington, whose 79-78-157 gave her a share of 17th and her best collegiate finish in three seasons at CU.

Both Maria Persson Gulda (80-79-159) and Joey Stetser (79-80-159) finished in 23rd to round out CU's scoring efforts while Jessie Malcolm (82-81-163) finished 31st.  Rella led all tournament individuals while Gina Rodriquez (82-83-165) and Jenn Footlik (85-82-167) finished 35th and 39th, respectively.

With less than a week to think about what could have been, the Buffs host the sixth annual Heather Farr Memorial, Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6 and 7 at Broomfield's Interlocken Resort.
