GOLFERS TIE FOR SEVENTH IN NEW MEXICO

October 02, 2004 | Men's Golf

ALBUQUERQUE?The University of Colorado men's golf team never got much going but still played fairly solid as the Buffaloes finished in a seventh-place tie here in the 50th annual William H. Tucker Invitational, which was completed Saturday.

Arizona held off a charge from host New Mexico to post an 855 score and defeat the Lobos by four strokes.  Colorado and Wichita State, district rivals, tied for seventh place, 21 strokes back at 876, or 12-over-par.  Despite finishing out of the top 5, that was the best team score the Buffaloes have ever posted in this tournament.

The Buffs entered the final round in a three-way tie for sixth place after opening with the third best 36 hole score in their history of competing in this meet.

Junior Edward McGlasson paced the Buffaloes with a 220 scorecard, but he shot a 77 in the final round and slipped from 12th after two rounds to a 24th place finish.  Three Buffs, juniors Kenny Coakley and Blake Moore and true freshman Shea Sena, were one shot behind McGlasson as all tied for 33rd with 221 totals.  Coakley recorded CU's best round of the day with a 3-under 69 on the 7,354-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course layout.  Moore and Sena, who continued pretty steady play for a true frosh, both put final round 2-over 74s into the books.

Redshirt frosh Jim Grady rounded out the Buff action with a 228 total, ending the meet with a 4-over 76 as his was the fourth and final score counting toward CU's team total of 293 on the day.  Grady tied for 72nd overall.

UNLV's Ryan Moore carded a 7-under 65 to finish at 205, or 11-under, to defeat New Mexico's Spencer Levin by two strokes.

“We shot five over to close things out, which isn't terrible, we just never lit a fire and got things to click as a team,” CU head coach Mark Simpson said.  “Edward struggled today and Blake made a triple bogey that prevented him from a good score,” “The freshmen didn't handle the greens particularly well, as they had a lot of chances for birdies and left with some bogeys, but they still managed to hang in there.”

Buff golfers who did not compete in this tournament will comprise a “JV” squad so-to-speak and participate Sunday and Monday in the Northern Colorado Invitational in Greeley.
