GOLFERS FINISH EIGHTH AT THE NELSON
October 24, 2004 | Men's Golf
PALO ALTO, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team shot the third best score in the final round but could only move up one spot as the Buffaloes finished eighth in Stanford's “The Nelson,” which was completed here Sunday.
No. 4 New Mexico won with an 830 team score, as the 2-over par total was good for a four-stroke win over No. 14 UNLV, which had entered the final round just one shot out of the lead. No. 13 Georgia State grabbed third with an 837 score, followed by Missouri and host Stanford tying for fifth at 844.
Colorado, ranked No. 29, shot a 282, or 6-over, which was bettered Sunday only by UC-Davis (278) and Stanford (280), as the course had the typical tough set-up for the final round. The Buffs finished with a 25-over 853 score to place eighth, as district rivals Kansas and Kansas State hung on to finish just ahead of CU in sixth and seventh, respectively.
The tournament at Stanford Golf Course was altered this year, as some course remodeling and reconfiguration currently had it playing to 6,444 yards and a unique par-69 layout.
Junior Kenny Coakley and freshman Shea Sena paced the Buffs, as both posted 1-over 70s Sunday; Coakley finished in a 12th-place tie with a 211 total while Sena tied for 16th at 212. Juniors Edward McGlasson and Blake Moore countered with 2-over 71s as both finished with 215 totals in tying for 31st. Sophomore Ryan Anderson rounded out CU's action with a 77 to shoot a 233 for the 54 holes, placing 79th.
New Mexico's Spencer Levin and Georgia State's Steve Tiley tied for medalist honors as both finished at 9-under 198; Tiley trailed Levin by four shots but caught him with a final round 64. The pair outdistanced third place by eight shots, but with teams catching departing flights, there was no playoff to decide the individual title.
“We played well today,” CU head coach Mark Simpson said. “Obviously, Ryan not being on his game put pressure on the other four guys and they came through and put up the third best team score of the final round. Shea continuing to play the way he is for a true freshman is a great sign for our program. We know Edward will step it up a notch and that will be good for us as well, Kenny continues to play solid and he's capable of taking it up a notch or two also, and Blake had some good things happen here and is starting to score better.
“We have three guys under a 74 stroke average which is where we need to be,” he added. “Our challenge will be to find a fifth guy, and I'll open up the competition in practice and it could be three or four guys battling for it. Ryan just couldn't get much going here, but he'll compete for that fifth spot.”
The Buffaloes have one tournament remaining this fall, The Prestige At PGA West in Palm Desert, Calif., on November 1-2.
