Nurmi, Vanderdys Advance with Upsets at ITA Regional

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah?Sophomore Veera Nurmi and senior Jessica Vanderdys won their first round main draw singles matches, both over ranked players on Thursday on the second day of the Wilson ITA Central Region Championships hosted by the University of Utah.
Nurmi was the highlight of today, defeating the 49th ranked Iva Gersic of New Mexico in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Nurmi has been solid during the last two weeks, as she has won five straight matches, including three here at this tournament. Vanderdys won her seventh match of the fall, taking three sets to upset Emily Kirchem of Colorado State 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Kirchem is ranked 120th in the ITA Preseason Women's Singles Rankings.
Freshman Monica Milewski also won her first round match in the main draw, dominating Air Force's Kat Bushey 6-1, 6-2. Milewski is having an outstanding first year for the Buffaloes, going to 7-2 in the fall, including wins of her last three matches.
Milewski and Vanderdys also were victorious in their second round doubles match with an 8-4 win over Nora Kurac and Amanda Pratzel of Missouri State. The duo remains undefeated this season at 5-0.
"It was a great singles day," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "We won three of our four main draw matches and took out two seeded players. The girls played tough, kept positive and looked for the opportunities and kept finding them."
The tournament features over 120 participants from 29 college teams across the region. Tournament play continues on Friday featuring main draw singles and doubles, and consolation rounds starting at 8:30 a.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals of all draws will be played Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The consolation and championship finals of both singles and doubles take place Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
