Women's Tennis Rallies, Upsets No. 54 Tulsa, 4-3

February 12, 2005 | Tennis

BOULDER ? Down 3-1 heading into the final three singles matches, the University of Colorado women's tennis team once again rallied and pulled out its second consecutive match victory upsetting No. 54 Tulsa, 4-3, late Friday night at the Harvest House Millennium Hotel.

The match was played at the Harvest House on four courts and took over five hours to complete.

Back on Feb. 3, CU rallied and a defeated then-No. 68 Washington State with two singles victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots for a 4-3 win.

It was the same thing against the Golden Hurricane (4-2), however this time CU lost the doubles point, the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions and was playing from behind most of the evening. The only bright spot in the early stages of the night was a straight set winner at No. 2 from senior Kendra Strandemo, 6-4, 6-3. Strandemo's win was her 63rd becoming the 15th CU women to win that many singles matches in a career.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the later half of the singles matches, the Buffaloes flexed its muscle once again at positions four through six (12-3 record this year) winning all three and pulling out a dramatic 4-3 win over the Golden Hurricane.

Freshman Veera Nurmi narrowed the deficit at No. 4 rallying from a set down to win, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 for her fourth straight triumph, while sophomore Martina Sedivec evened the match score at three taking a straight-set winner, 6-2, 6-2 setting up the last match heroics at No. 6.

Freshman Gleisy Torres Torres took matters in her own hands and followed suit as Sedivec did, winning in two sets, 6-3, 6-3 for her fourth spring victory and her 10th of the 2004-05 season.

“It was a great team win,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We fought like Buffaloes and played well tonight. My hat goes off to Martina and Gleisy because they knew they had to win their matches for us to win.”

CU's win over the Golden Hurricane is their third in five meetings breaking a two-match losing streak. The Buffaloes (4-1) have won three straight, two over ranked opponents and begin Big 12 Conference play on Monday, Feb. 14 against Oklahoma State at the Harvest House. First serve and the doubles competition begins at 6:30 p.m.
