Hanson, Sedivec, Strandemo Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

DALLAS - A trio of University of Colorado student-athletes were named to the 2005 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Tennis team, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Of the 64 men's and women's student-athletes listed, three are CU student-athletes. Senior Kendra Strandemo and junior Jenny Hanson were named to the first team, while sophomore Martina Sedivec was named to the second team.

Hanson, is a junior psychology major from Boulder, is a repeat honoree after earning first team honors last year. Strandemo, a senior from San Diego, Calif., is a theatre major, and Sedivec, a sophomore from Montreal, Quebec, Canada majors in international affairs.

It's the first academic All-Big 12 honor for Strandemo and Sedivec.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's tennis academic all-league squad consisted of 33 first team members combined with seven on the second team, while the men had 18 first team members and six student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation also are eligible.

The student-athletes on the academic squads will participate in the 2005 Big 12 Conference Men's & Women's Tennis Championships scheduled for April 28-May 1 at the University of Texas Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.

Colorado is the No. 6 seed at the conference tournament and will play No. 11 seed Kansas this Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Texas A&M was the 2004 women's championship winner.
