Women's Golf Finishes Third At Ron Moore

September 27, 2005 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. ?The University of Colorado women's golf team had the third best round of the day in final round play and took third in the Ron Moore Invitational, hosted by the University of Denver, here Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Lindsay Caljouw earned the first top 10 finish of her young career thanks to a one-over par 73 today, wrapping her tournament up at two-over 218.  It is CU's highest tournament finish for a freshman since now-junior Hannah Hoch took second in the same tournament in 2003.

“It was a frustrating day for Lindsay today in spite of that third place finish,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “She didn't make a putt all day, so she had to fight hard to shoot 73.  It was a tough round because she had a lot of birdie opportunities but just couldn't convert.   She finished third with good play, but it wasn't outstanding.  Once she gets all facets of her game going at once she'll start shooting some really low numbers.”

Hoch rallied from 24th place yesterday to finish 17th with a three over 75, good for a 229 total. She shared 17th with teammate Maria Persson-Gulda, who had her highest round of the tournament at 79.

“Hannah had things going pretty well, then had one bad hole, her 16th,” said Kelly.  “She double-bogeyed and was in a bit of trouble. She's getting closer to getting on her game.  She had better putting today and I know it will come.”

Senior Jessie Malcolm shot 78 to place her 26th.  Junior Lindsay Koth had the biggest improvement in her score of the tournament for CU, moving from 83 in Monday's second round to a 75 today, an eight-stroke improvement.

“That was really a good breakthrough for (Koth),” Kelly said.  “She was putting a lot better than yesterday, and I think she is finally gaining confidence in the changes she has made in her game.  It's nice to have all five players contribute a score in the tournament.  When somebody's down, someone has to come in and help out.”

Host institution Denver took the title with a final round 289, the best team round of the tournament.  They were the only team to finish under 900 for the tournament, finishing up at 296-295-289 ? 880.  Denver's Emily Hoeper took medalist honors with a 73-68-71 ? 212.

“Our play was better than the first tournament, but we're still not even close to meeting our potential,” said Kelly.  “To be honest, we're not happy with third place, but we are happy with the improvement.  I am counting on seeing more of it next week.

Speaking of next week, Colorado women's golf will be back in action next Monday, Oct. 3 and Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they play host to the Heather Farr CU Memorial.  CU will host 18 teams, including Oregon State, New Mexico State and Washington State, Colorado State, Denver and San Jose State.  Teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun-style start, playing 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.  Admission and parking are free.  The Omni Interlocken is located off Highway 36 at the Interlocken exit.
