CU Men Take First, Women Place Sixth At Pre-Nationals
October 14, 2006 | Cross Country
The women's team didn't fair quite as well, finishing sixth (228 points), down from a fourth-place finish a year ago.
“We had a mixed day,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “The women, who ran very well at the Rocky Mountain Shootout, didn't have as good of a day. The men, who struggled at the shootout, had a very good day today.”
CU's men had three harriers cross the finish in the top-10. The Buffs were lead by junior All-American Stephen Pifer. Pifer took seventh with a personal-best mark of 23:48.4 on the 8k course. Senior All-American Billy Nelson came in just over two seconds after Pifer. Nelson also recorded a personal-best at 23:50.3. Junior All-American Brent Vaughn was the third Buff across the line and took 10th overall (23:53.0).
Junior All-American James Strang and senior Erik Heinonen also helped make up CU's team score. Strang earned a 20th-place finish with a time of 24:05.7. Heinonen took 30th in 24:11.8. Both were personal records.
Sophomore Bradley Harkrader finished in a personal-record 24:32.7, notching 57th place. Sophomore Seth DeMoor took 72nd in his debut at the invitational. He recorded a time of 24:42.9.
On the women's side, sophomore Jenny Barringer took third-place overall and was the first Buff crossing the finish. She cut 26 seconds off her previous personal record on the course, taking a time of 20:09.8.
“Jenny Barringer had a very good race up front,” Wetmore said. “She closed hard on the leaders of the race after being sent out deliberately slowly by me. She looked very strong and like somebody who can be a lot further up at the end of the season.”
Junior All-American Liza Pasciuto earned a 15th-place finish. Pasciuto knocked off 48 seconds from her personal best with a mark of 20:26.3 and earned her first top-15 finish in the event.
”Liza has a nice return and has been gaining momentum after every meet,” Wetmore said.
Rounding out the women's score were freshmen Aislinn Ryan and Claire Maduza and senior Erin Marston. Ryan took 46th (21:08.0), Maduza placed 51st (21:14.1) and Marston was 113th (21:50.4).
Freshman Hilary McClendon earned a 129th-place finish with a time of 21:59.1. Redshirt freshman Rachel Gioscia took 164th (22:19.9).
“The women will drop somewhat in the polls, which is okay,” Wetmore explained. “I think we were a little over-ranked for now. But I don't think our ranking is unattainable by the end of the season. We have some young people who need to continue to develop.”
In the open races, freshman Emily Hanenburg finished 71st with a mark of 22:36.9.
Five men ran the open race for CU. Junior Pete Janson finished fourth overall in a mark of 24:42.9. Sophomore Chris Pannone cut 31 seconds off his personal best, to finish 22nd in 25:04.5. Junior Shaun Lyle placed 57th (25:29.4), senior Daniel Kenney placed 84th (25:43.9) and Kenyon Neuman placed 191th (27:06.8).
