LAS CRUCES, N.M. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team got off to a rocky start here in the New Mexico State Price's Give ?Em Five Intercollegiate and are currently in a tie for 12th place after an opening round 313.

“The upperclassmen got off to a bad start on the back nine, but they were able to rally on the front and we still have a shot to finish high on the leaderboard with two rounds to go,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly.  “The course is in great shape, it's fairly long and it's pretty narrow but it's a fair course.  We will be fine tomorrow.”

Freshman Dominique Pytlewski led the way for the Buffaloes in the first round with a three-over par 75.  It's the first time in her short career that she has been the low scorer in the first round for Colorado and her score tied her collegiate low round.  She is currently in 11th place, just three strokes back.  Pytlewski opened with a 35 on her first nine holes, but finished with a 40 on the back for her score.

“Domi played well, she made three or four birdies,” said Kelly.  “She missed some other opportunities, and she finished with a bogey and had to get up and down a lot on the back nine.  She had some trouble placing her driver and here that will get you into trouble because it's a tight course, but she did great and has room to improve for tomorrow.”

“I just need to work on finishing my rounds strong,” said Pytlewski.  “I had a solid front nine and was sticking it pretty close. The back was just the opposite. I was hitting my driver strong but I wasn't accurate and had to get up and down a lot.  Tomorrow I need to focus on bringing it home.”

Pytlewski was followed by fellow freshman Christine Kim and junior Lindsay Senger, both of whom shot 79.  This marks Kim's first time playing in the Colorado rotation, though she has played in two previous tournaments as an individual.

“Both Christine and Lindsay missed some putts, but everything else seems to be in order,” said Kelly.  “They both put some work in after the round to try and correct what wasn't working and hopefully that will yield some good results on Tuesday.”

"Nobody had a good round today," said Senger.  "It really was just putting today for me and it's something that is easily correctable.  I'm not going to steer the ball tomorrow, I'm just going to trust my swing and take what the course gives me."

Seniors Lindsay Koth and Hannah Hoch struggled to scores of 80 and 84, respectively.  Both got off to shaky starts, but shored things up on their back nine.

Play will continue in the Price's Give ?Em Five Intercollegiate on Tuesday with another 18 holes, with teams teeing off at 8:30 a.m.  The final round will get underway at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
