BROOMFIELD, Colo. ?The University of Denver leads the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Invitational by seven strokes over the University of Idaho after two rounds here Monday at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club.
Denver carded a 594 over two rounds, followed by Idaho (601), San Jose State (602), and Fresno State and Colorado (603) to round out the top five. Host school Colorado led after 18 holes with a six-over par 294, leading Idaho by five strokes (299) and San Jose State by six (300).
In the afternoon round, it was Denver's Emily Hoeper leading the Pioneer charge to reel in the Buffs and the Vandals, shooting the best single round score of the day, a three-under 69. The Pioneers improved by 10 strokes as a team from the first round to the second round (302 to 292) to take over the lead.
In the first round, senior Hannah Hoch had CU's best round of the day, shooting an even par 72 in her first round. She was followed by freshman Julie Kim (73), senior Lindsay Koth (74) and freshman Dominique Pytlewski (75) as the first round scorers.
“We came out and played a solid first round and set the tone for the rest of tournament,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly. “Hannah set the pace by shooting even par in the first round and I was really pleased with that.”
The second round was highlighted by Senger's comeback score of 74 after scoring an 81 in the morning. Unfortunately for CU, she was the only Buffalo that improved in the second round. Pytlewski and Hoch each shot a six-over 78, followed by Koth's 79 and an 81 from Kim.
“Senger did a great job of rallying and contributing in the second round,” said Kelly. “The rest of the team did not putt too well and we lost some ground. But it's a situation where we can succeed.”
In the individual standings, Dale Gammie of the University of Hawai'i shot two rounds under par, putting up a 71 in both sessions to lead the field at a two-under 142. She is followed by Kayla Morinaga of Portland State (75-69-144), Stephanie Sherlock of Denver (73-72-145) and Lehua Wise and Hoeper at 147. Hoch is Colorado's top player in the individual standings in 13th place.
The third and final round of the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Invitational will tee off at 8:30 a.m. at the Omni. Denver, Idaho and San Jose State will play together, as Fresno State, CU and Hawai'i are in the second set of pairings.
“Tomorrow is another day,” said Kelly. “We need to come out and be determined to play one shot at a time and not get too far ahead of ourselves. I think the experience of winning at CSU should help this team be in contention tomorrow. I'm looking to our two seniors to use their experience and knowledge of this course to set the tone for the day. It should be a great day of golf.”
