KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team shot a first round score of 311 on Monday and are in 16th place at the College of Charleston Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate.

Campbell University is in first place with a 295 first round score. They are followed by Miami (296), Western Carolina (298), Iowa State (301) and East Tennessee State (301) to round out the top five.

In the individual standings, Steffi Kirchmayr of the hosts from the College of Charleston was the one of four golfers under par in the first round, carding a three-under 69.  There are three players two strokes back at 71, Desiree Karlsson of Western Carolina, Karly Pinder of Iowa State, and Jessica Steward of Miami.

“I think from 100 yards in we are still pretty weak and that is what hurt us the most today,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly.  “Our putting is not that bad, but our bunker play and all our approaches need to get better.  Everyone is disappointed. It's a good experience for the younger players to play this kind of course.  We have to finish up our second round tomorrow and hopefully we can play a good third round so we can end the fall on a good note.”

Freshman Julie Kim provided the best round of the day for the Buffaloes in her first tournament in month.  She shot a one over par 73 to lead Colorado and is in sixth place with one round in the books.  Kim was even par on the front nine and one over on the back.

She was followed by classmates Dominique Pytlewski and Christine Kim, who both shot a seven-over 79.  Pytlewski struggled on the front nine with a six over 42, but put together a solid back with a one-over 37.

Sophomore Lindsay Caljouw was the fourth best golfer for Colorado, shooting an 80. She was followed by junior Lindsay Senger, who shot an 83.

“It's a totally different type of golf than what we've seen this season,” said Kelly.  “There are trees and there are big swampy ponds and there are alligators...it's a different environment and it's a good experience especially for the young ones.  We just are not adapting very quickly and that's something that will have to change tomorrow.”

The Buffaloes will wrap up their fall tournament schedule tomorrow in the final round.
