Milewski Falls At ITA All-American Singles Main Draw

         PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. ? University of Colorado sophomore Monica Milewski's bid to advance at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championships came to an end Thursday afternoon falling in the first round in straight sets.

 

         Milewski was one eight women who qualified for the main draw by winning three matches, fell to No. 8 Lindsay Nelson (University of Southern California), 6-0, 6-2.

 

         Thursday's match was the fourth in three days for the Park Ridge, Ill. native that included a three hour, 50 minute marathon in Wednesday's qualifying final win over Renata Kucerkova (Fresno State) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

 

          Milewski, who will continue to play at the invitational in the consolation draw on Friday morning, needs to defeat Celia Durkin of Stanford to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships at Ohio State, Nov. 2-5.

 

         On Tuesday, she upset the No. 8 tournament seed and No. 35 ranked Kim Coventry (Kentucky) 6-1, 7-6(3), then followed with an upset winner over No. 59 ranked Monica Dancevic (Georgia) 7-6(5), 6-1.

 

         Nationally ranked at No. 86, Milewski became the first CU woman in the last 15 years to reach an individual national singles main draw tournament. She falls to 6-1 this season.

 

          Starting Friday, the rest of the CU women's tennis team participates at the 2006 USAFA Invitational. In addition to CU and Air Force, the seven other schools are Colorado State, Northern Colorado, Denver, Wyoming, Northern Arizona, Memphis and Cornell.

 

         Although the invitational began Thursday, the Buffaloes will begin play with singles and doubles on Friday and concluding on Saturday.
