Milewski Comes Up Short In Consolation Round

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. ? Playing five matches in four days took its toll on Monica Milewski as the University of Colorado sophomore lost in the consolation Round of 16 at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championships Friday afternoon.

Milewski lost for the second straight day this time to No. 20 ranked Celia Durkin of Stanford, 7-5, 6-2. With a win over Durkin, Milewski would have qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championships at Ohio State, Nov. 2-5. Instead, she adds three more victories to her 2006 fall record, two of them over the No. 35 and No. 59 ranked players in the country.

Her last two matches were played against the No. 8 and No. 20^th ranked players.

“You can't ask for more than that,” said CU assistant coach Dominic Modise. “Monica had a great run and gained a lot of experience playing against some of the elite tennis players in the country.”

Ranked No. 86 nationally, Milewski will be idle until the Central Region Championships, Oct. 19-25 at Salt Lake City. She's 6-2 this fall season and improved her career singles record to 24-15.

Oct. 6 lost No. 20 Celia Durkin (Stanford) 5-7, 2-6, Round of 16 - consolation;

Milewski Notes:

- became the first CU woman in the last 15 years to reach an individual national singles main draw tournament;

- was one of one eight women who qualified for the main draw by winning straight three matches;

- victory over Renata Kucerkova (Fresno State) lasted 3 hours, 50 minutes; win advanced her to the main draw;

- Her victories over nationally ranked opponents Coventry and Dancevic are the first over the Top-60 this year; Milewski has defeated five nationally singles players in her career;

- Two-year fall record improves to 15-5 (went 9-3 last fall);

- last year, Milewski was the ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year; finished the spring season as the nation's No. 120 (out of 125) singles player; finished the spring as the No. 9^th (out of 30); went 18-13 for the year in singles last year.
