Women's Golf in 16th at UNLV

March 13, 2006 | Women's Golf

LAS VEGAS?The University of Colorado women's golf team is tied for 16th at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational after a first round score of 313 here on Monday afternoon at the Black Mountain Golf Club.

Long Beach State is the current leader after a one-over par 289 outing.  They are closely followed by host school UNLV (290), with Fresno State six strokes back at 295.  Kay Hoey is the leader after one round with a four-under par 78.

“I think to be honest, I think we're almost there,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “I'm really happy and I think we are really close to getting there.  After the rounds, they all went to practice and stayed out there for two hours, so that tells me that they are motivated to get it going and they know they are very close to making that turn.  They deserve to get a good round together.  They are trying, they care, they are so close.  I would like to see a good round to get the tide changing. They are doing what it takes to shoot good rounds.”

CU had two golfers tie for the best rounds; junior Hannah Hoch and sophomore Lindsay Senger both shot 77 on the day, both tied for 40th.  Hoch, who plays in the top spot in the CU rotation, posted three birdies on the day to go with a trio of bogeys and a pair of doubles.  She opened with a bogey, then posted two pars before a double bogey on No. 4.   She then worked par or better on four straight holes before a bogey on No. 9  pushed her to three-over 39 on the front.  Hoch had a better go of it on the back, posting two birdies and finishing with a 38 and a total of 77.

Senger, playing in the fifth spot for Colorado, tied her second-best career collegiate low round with her score of 77.  She entered the rotation on a regular basis this fall, and has responded with her two best career scores in that span.  Senger posted a 74 at the Kent Youel Invitational in the fall.  She too bogeyed the first hole, and posted four bogeys on the front to finish at 40.  Senger rallied on the back nine with a pair of birdies and a nine-hole score of 37, CU's best nine-hole score on the day.

“What's interesting is that's the worst Senger could have shot,” said Kelly.  “She hit 14 greens and just had some putting problems. I can't complain at all.  The team we have here, they have worked really hard over the last week and are doing the right things to score well, it just a matter of time.  They are working hard.  I can't complain at all about the effort.”

CU's third-best golfer on the day was freshman Lindsay Caljouw, making her spring season debut with a seven-over 79, tied for 57th.  She had a somewhat consistent front nine, making par on six of nine holes, including four in row.  But double bogeys on No. 1 and No. 9 took her out at 41 on the front side. After teeing off the back with a pair of bogeys, she again rattled off four straight pars before a bogey-birdie combo on 16 and 17.

The Buffs' other Lindsay, junior Lindsay Koth, shot an eight-over par 80. She is tied for 68th, while senior Maria Persson-Gulda put up an 81, good for 75th place.

The UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational will resume Tuesday morning with one round, with another to come on Wednesday.  CU golf fans can follow the action at www.golfstat.com.
