March 18, 2006 | Tennis
BOULDER ? Senior Jessica Vanderdys won her 70th career singles match becoming only the 13th women in school history to accomplish that feat helping the University of Colorado women's tennis team to a 7-0 shutout over the Missouri Tigers, Saturday afternoon at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.
With the win, the No. 39 nationally ranked Buffaloes improve to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play, while the Tigers drop to 5-6 and remain winless in the conference with a 0-5 mark.
CU also improves their dominance over the Tigers winning their 22nd match in 24 outings, including all 11 meetings in Boulder.
The Buffaloes opened the doubles portion winning the point for the seventh time this dual season taking two of the three slots. Vanderdys and Gleisy Torres Torres won easily at No. 1 doubles, 8-1 for their fourth victory in five attempts, while at No. 2, Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 winner.
In singles, it was business as usual for the Buffs cruising to straight set winners in five of six slots.
Vanderdys became the second CU women's tennis player in this century to accomplish the 70-win plateau winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Last spring, 2005 graduate Kendra Strandemo won 71 matches over her four-year career.
Milewski, who is the lone nationally ranked player on the team at No. 55, picked up her 10th win of the spring taking a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 2; Ewa Losinski also picked up her 10th win of the spring with a straight winner (7-5, 6-1); and Veera Nurmi recorded her team-best 11th win of the dual season with an easy 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Nurmi's win, her seventh straight, was also her 20th of the season equaling the 20 victories she set during her freshman campaign last year.
Rounding out the scoring was Jendrian and Torres Torres, who kept the CU's fourth shutout of the season intact with wins. Jendrian reached the winners' circle for the 10th time this spring with a 6-1, 6-2 winner, and Torres Torres outlasted her opponent in a third set super tie-breaker, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0(8).
Earlier this season, CU also blanked Air Force (Jan. 18), Gonzaga (Feb. 5), and Portland (Feb. 19).
The Buffs are idle until April 2 when they host No. 48 Texas A&M at the South Boulder Courts beginning at 11 a.m.
