Women's Golf 10th After First Round at Big 12s

April 17, 2006 | Women's Golf

LINCOLN, Neb.?The University of Colorado women's golf team is 10th after the first round of play here at the 10th Annual Big 12 Women's Golf Championships at the Country Club of Lincoln.

Oklahoma State is the team leader after one round of play, shooting 301 (+13) to lead Texas A&M by a single stroke (302) and third place Nebraska and Baylor (307).  CU shot 315, just eight strokes out of third and only five strokes from fifth place.

“The good news after today is that we are sill very much in it even with a very poor round,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly.  “This course looks very easy when you glance at it, but you really have to hit a lot of fairways and we didn't.  We had a good practice afterwards, and I think people are disappointed with their performance and looking to turn it around.  We just have to hit more fairways.”

Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll leads the medalist race with the only under-par score of the day, a three-under 69.  Texas Tech's Gloriana Sato is second with an even par 72, followed by Jennifer Karr of Oklahoma State (73) and Eli Brown of Nebraska (74).

Lone Buff senior Maria Persson-Gulda led the way for CU individually, posting a six-over par 78 to tie for 26th.  She was two over on the front nine, rattling off five straight pars on holes 4-9, but opened the back nine with back-to-back bogeys.  She would also go one-over on 15 and 16, then par 17 and 18 to leave her four over on the back.  She is only two strokes out of the top 10 in her fourth Big 12 Tournament.

“Maria has been struggling with her swing a little bit, but she's been working on it and she really hit her irons well, she just struggled with her driver a little bit,” said Kelly.  “She's still very much in the game and after her work following the round today, I think she could make some strides tomorrow.  It should be a good day.”

Freshman Lindsay Caljouw was in top five contention for much of the day.  She finished the front nine at just one-over, with two bogeys and a birdie in her first nine holes.  She played the next five holes with just one bogey to put her at two-over with five to play, but she played the last five holes at five-over due to a bogey on 15, a triple on 16 and another bogey on 17.  Her score of 79 still leaves her well within striking distance of the top 10.  She currently sits in a tie for 32nd place overall.

“Caljouw went out-of-bounds on 16, and obviously that hurt some of her momentum,” said Kelly.  “She was pretty heated after that and was very disappointed with herself.  She has to trust her swing and hit it at the target.  She has a great golf swing, and now the competitor in her is fired up and hopefully she can put that into her game tomorrow.”

Juniors Hannah Hoch and Lindsay Koth also posted scores of 79 in the first round.  Both played the front nine to four-over, then improving one stroke to three-over on the back nine.  This is Hoch's third Big 12 tournament, and Koth's first since her freshman year.  Neither posted a double bogey or worse in first round play and, like Caljouw, are well within reach of a strong showing with two rounds still to play.

“Koth had a shaky start but brought it back under control,” said Kelly.  “Hannah played consistent and just had a couple of holes that jumped up and stung her.  They both are capable of a better score and hopefully today will provide them with the experience to improve for Tuesday.”

Lindsay Senger, playing in the No. 5 spot, opened with a birdie on No. 1, one of just two for Colorado today, and played to par through the sixth hole.  A double bogey on seven followed by a pair of bogeys on eight and nine buried the sophomore at four-over for the front nine.  She regrouped for four pars on the back nine, but played her last three holes to four-over to finish at +10 for an 82.  She is in 47th place after one round.

Overall, Kelly is happy with the way the golf course is playing and despite a lackluster outing today, she feels like it's a course that the Buffs can perform better on in the next two days.

“The greens are in very good shape,” said Kelly.  “This is a very traditional course with small, undulating greens so you have to be disciplined. It's a great course and great for a women's championship. You have to play smart and hit it straight.  We learned a lot today and I'm pleased with the response I saw after the round. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and I know the girls are too.  This course is so much like Boulder Country Club and we play that all the time so we need to play this course the very same way.”

The 2006 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship will resume Tuesday morning with one round, with another to come on Wednesday.  CU golf fans can follow the action and check the Buff tee times for Tuesday's action at www.golfstat.com.
