Colorado Falls Short On Day Two At Nationals

Anthony Chiulli and Pifer finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the race. Chiulli finished with a mark of 3:52.49 and Pifer crossed the finish line in 3:53.00 after getting tangled up. Both failed to qualify for the finals. Pifer had the top mark of 3:40.70 entering the competition, while Chiulli had the 11th best time.
“It was a very, very disappointing day for us, beginning with Stephen Pifer getting involved in some traffic in his race and falling in his race,” Colorado Head Coach Mark Wetmore explained. “Two officials raised yellow flags as if a foul had occurred. I added an official protest, but the protest was denied and the yellow flags went away and he was not allowed into the finals.
”Anthony Chiulli ran in the second heat. He looked pretty tired. It was an extremely slow and tactical heat. Only the first four advanced in that heat. Nobody advanced on time in that heat.”
Bret Schoolmeester and Christine Bolf were unable to claim a spot on the podium in the 10,000 meters in their last collegiate race. Schoolmeester finished 14th in the race with a mark of 29:35.31. Bolf took 17th overall with a time of 34:49.62. Both recorded fifth-place finishes at last years nationals.
'The two 10,000 went very similarly,” Wetmore said. “Christine looked quite tired and flat in her race and didn't have a very good day at all. The same with Bret, who also looked as if he had had too long of a season.”
Carly Newlands, competing at her first national championship, finished 26th. She recorded a throw of 46-00.00 to complete her career at CU. Newlands was just the eighth female thrower at CU to qualify for nationals.
“Carly threw in the first round of the shot, but did not advance to the finals,” Wetmore said.
“It was a disappointing day, but we still have Jenny Barringer and Brent Vaughn in the finals tomorrow, but nobody into the finals on Saturday.”
The Buffs will wrap up the outdoor season and action at the NCAA Championship tomorrow, Friday, June 9. Jenny Barringer will compete in the finals of the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 7:35 p.m. (MST). Brent Vaughn will also run in the 5k finals at 8 p.m.
