Tennis Opens Fall Season Against Denver

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team began the 2006-07 season in positive fashion winning four singles and three doubles matches head-to-head against the University of Denver, Saturday afternoon at the South Campus Courts in an abbreviated two-team tournament.
Originally, a three-team invitational after New Mexico decided not to travel to Boulder with the inclement weather after Friday's competition was canceled, both the Buffaloes and the Pioneers decided to play one another with both schools officially opening the fall season.
Saturday morning's play consisted of singles where CU took four of six singles slots.
Sophomore Monica Milewski, nationally ranked No. 86 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) began the season with a three-set winner of Annette Aksdal, 6-3, 6-7, 6-0, as did junior Gleisy Torres Torres defeating Kyla Iwinski, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
CU saw pair of freshman reach the winners' circle in their collegiate debuts as Camila Belassi edged Rachel Sackmaster, 7-5, 6-4, in addition to Melisa Esposito defeating Marisa Mechem, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles, the Buffs swept all three positions as Milewski and Jendrian teamed up for an 8-5 winner over Aksdal/Iwinski; at No. 2 Almagno and Esposito defeated Sackmaster/Bauregger, 8-5; and at No. 3, Sedivec and freshman Camila Belassi defeated Mechem/Boothman, 8-4.
Day two of the CU Invitational begins at 9 a.m. Sunday with another round of singles and doubles play.
