Tennis Closes Day Two Of CU Invite Against Denver

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team wrapped day two of the CU Invitational against the University of Denver splitting six singles win apiece during Sunday's play at the South Campus Courts.

 

Both the Buffaloes and the Pioneers played two flights of six singles matches apiece with DU taking four of six slots in the morning session, while CU reversed the trend in the afternoon winning four of six.

 

In the morning matches, No. 86 nationally ranked Monica Milweski defeated Rachel Sackmaster in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, along with Veera Nurmi defeating Julia Bauregger, 6-4, 6-2. It was Milewski's second win in as many days, while Nurmi claimed her first win of the fall season.

 

In the afternoon, a quartet of Buffaloes recorded victories as Franziska Jendrian defeated Sackmaster in three tough sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5; Melisa Esposito won her second match in as many days defeating Bauregger, 6-3, 7-5; Martina Sedivec claimed her first win of the season edging Kyla Iwinski, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; and Nurmi made it two-for-two during Sunday's round defeating Lorinda Boothman, 6-1, 6-3.

 

With her two wins on Sunday, Nurmi won her 43rd and 44th singles matches of her career moving her into 27th place on the CU all-time victories list.

 

Other CU women claiming wins were Camila Belassi defeating Esposito, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3; and Milewski picked up another singles win, this time defeating teammate Victoria Almagno, 6-2, 6-1.

 

In doubles, DU turned the tables on CU on Sunday taking two of three matches after the Buffs swept all three on Saturday. CU's Esposito/Sedivec defeated Annette Aksdal/Kyla Iwinski, 8-6 to close out the day's competition.

 

Up next for CU is the All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades, Calif. from Sept. 30-Oct. 8. Milweski will be the lone player attending the event, while the rest of the team travels to the Air Force Invitational, Oct. 5-7 at Colorado Springs.
