Milewski Upsets No. 35 and No. 59 Ranked Players

October 03, 2006 | Tennis

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. ? University of Colorado sophomore Monica Milewski opened singles play with a pair of upsets Tuesday in the qualifying rounds advancing at the Riviera/ Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championships.

Milewski opened her first round play with an upset victory over the No. 8 seed and No. 35 ranked Kim Coventry of the University of Kentucky, 6-1, 7-6(3). Milewski, the 2006 ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year, then followed with her second upset on the day and defeated No. 59 ranked Monica Dancevic of Georgia, 7-6(5), 6-1.

Milewski, ranked No. 86, advances to Wednesday's qualifying third round at 12:45 p.m. (mountain time). If she wins that match against Renata Kucerkova (Fresno State), Milewski will be one of eight women from the qualifying rounds to advance to the main draw featuring 24 women who have already qualified.

“Monica played very well and stepped it up,” said CU assistant coach Dominic Modise. “She played very smart and kept fighting all the time. If she keeps playing like this, she'll be playing in the main draw.”

Milewski's second win over a nationally ranked player was an impressive one as Georgia's Dancevic was a member of the Miami Hurricanes last spring. The ?Canes reached the NCAA Championships finals and finished with a final team ranking of four. Dancevic posted a 25-11 overall singles mark and final ITA ranking of No. 82 last spring.

Milewski won her fifth consecutive match to start the fall tennis season. She won all three of her singles two weeks ago at the CU Invitational.
